To the casual observer, it may come as a surprise that the Summerfield site in Kidderminster has been at the forefront of defence technology since the 1950s, in fact many people probably drive past it without even realising it is there.


However, since 1951 – formerly as ICI/IMI then from 1988 Royal Ordnance and since 2003 as part of the Anglo-French Group, Roxel – this has been home to Roxel (UK Rocket Motors) Ltd, involved in the research, development, design and manufacture of solid propellant rocket motors for tactical missile systems for air, sea and ground forces.


The company is now the European leader in tactical propulsion systems and the third largest in the world, whilst Roxel UK has gone from strength to strength. This continued success has come against the backdrop of one of the same key issues that a more typical engineering company might come up against - skilled people and where to find them.


The latest ‘Midlands Report on Jobs’, produced by IHS Markit on behalf of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, confirmed engineering was again in the top 5 skills in short supply, on both a permanent and temporary basis. Furthermore, a report by Engineering UK last year estimated an additional 1.8 million engineers and technically qualified people are needed by 2025 to meet the rising demand and bridge the skills gap.


With all this in mind, it has been imperative to Roxel UK that they have been able to identify and work with partners who can help source the specialist skills they require, within a very niche industry. Hewett Recruitment have now worked with Roxel for over a decade, helping to source temporary and permanent members of staff, as well as offering advice and guidance on all areas of recruitment.


Jointly owned by MBDA and Safran Ceramics, Roxel was formed in February 2003 by the merging of Celerg of France (a JV born of the combining operations of SNPE and Aerospatiale in 1993) and Royal Ordnance Rocket Motors of the UK (a division of BAe Systems).
