DRIVING: A comparable Mercedes GLC and the Q5 are almost
inseparable here, with their 2.0 diesel equivalents cracking 62mph in 8 seconds. At this point you can forget a Discovery which is over a second slower. Of the trio, the Q5 is the more nimble and agile, helped by the new MQB platform which saves 90kg and it rides well on the 19” alloys as long as you keep the Audi Drive Select function in comfort or auto.
Despite the weight saving, Audi have stuck to what it knows with the Q5, it’s handling is not set up to be the ‘sportiest’ SUV in this sector – they will leave the upcoming SQ5 to deal with that challenge. Again, you only have to look at the sales figures of the last Q5 to see that Audi are right with this strategy, it’s a family car first and foremost and it eats up miles with no drama ensuring you and your passengers are sitting in a supremely comfortable environment in almost eerie quietness.
All 2.0 engines come with a seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox and the brand new ‘quattro ultra’ four-wheel drive system. This clever piece of technology is both reactive (in a matter of milliseconds when road conditions change) and predictive (based on MMI navigation data) to switch between four-wheel and more efficient front-wheel drive. Predictably with Audi, the system is so well engineered that you cannot hear or feel this happening. In the vast majority of circumstances, the vehicle operates in front –wheel drive
mode, all in the name of improving efficiency to the tune of 0.3 litres every 60 miles according to Audi engineers.
BACK IN THE SHOWROOM: The new Q5 starts from £37,390 in SE trim. My test car in
S Line spec also came with the brilliant Audi Matrix LED headlights, the Comfort and Sound pack (which adds a Bang & Olufsen sound system and front seats electronically adjustable in every way imaginable), the Technology Pack (wireless phone charging, an uprated MMI navigation system which uses Google Earth™ and Wi-Fi hotspot) and metallic paint came in at just under £44,000..
For PCP buyers, Audi has done a very thorough job to help deliver the car to the customer at an attractive value proposition, helped a great deal by the strong residual values which outperform offerings from the likes of Land Rover and BMW.
LISTERS AUDI: Tina picked her review car up from Birmingham Audi, a
statement site for the brand. Staggering in size, it boasts a new car display downstairs, as well as public and private handover areas and a used car showroom upstairs that is accessed by its own lifts and escalator. The all new Q5 is now available to test drive today at Listers Audi in Birmingham, Coventry, Stratford-upon-Avon and Worcester.
