2017 has been dubbed ‘the year of the haircut’ by those in the know. At the S/S 2017 shows, session icon Guido Palau revealed that models were ‘so much more open to cutting now’ – and previously Rapunzel-locked girls stepped out with short sharp bobs and choppy crops.


A-listers have got in on the act too – Katy Perry and Kristen Stewart have bravely unveiled their buzz cuts, while serial trend setter Kim K has chosen a shoulder-length cut over her bottom-skimming style. It’s certainly a change from the one-length waves we’ve seen on magazine covers for season after season.


If you’ve been thinking about a new look, there’s no better time than now. Hair that falls to the shoulders or above is the fashionistas choice and looks strikingly chic for the Summer months (as well as being super-cool – in all senses of the word!). Wear it poker straight and shiny for that celebrity finish, or add a hint of a wave with salt spray for a beach vibe that’s enduringly popular.


A crop is my top tip in terms of manageability, but it can take some getting used to – it can also accentuate your facial features, so if you have a prominent chin or nose, you might find that it draws more attention to these. Speak to your stylist about shapes to suit you – many clients find that keeping longer layers through the top of the style gives them the change they are looking for, while still offering softness and femininity.


Despite their reputation, short cuts can still offer versatility with a little imagination. Try wearing the top section in a micro bun, or dress up a bob with simple metallic slides or an on-trend bandana.
