LIVE24SEVEN // Motoring, Sport & Entertainment AUDI Q5 - MOTOR ING R E V I EW The impressive All New

AUDI Q5 S LINE 2.0 TDI 190PS S TRONIC The all new Q5 is the most important new car for Audi in 2017, and Tina has been behind the wheel to find out whats new...

The old Q5 had been with us since 2009, and firmly established itself not only as Audi’s best-selling SUV worldwide, but also as the most popular premium SUV on our shores. Strong sales continued right up until its death at the start of this year so this new one has quite an act to follow.

I got my hands on what will likely be one of the most popular versions in the UK, the S Line 2.0 TDI 190 PS quattro. Despite all the headlines over diesel cars, indications are that proposals only cover cars that do not meet Euro 6 standards, which the Q5, (like all its main rivals) does and only for driving in the centre of major cities.

INTERIOR/ DRIVING POSITION: The easy part of any Audi test - If you want see a benchmark interior, you look at an

Audi, nothing else can touch it. This run of form started with the TT and carried on through the Q7, A4 and A5. The Q5 in this instance is as predictable as a one of Owen Farrell’s conversions, ending up right where you’d expect it to be. Just like Owen, some may ask for a bit more flair here but sales performance suggests customers want an interior that uses fine materials in a simple, reliable and astonishingly well put together finish, so Audi were never going to deviate from this well-trodden path.

The driving position is excellent, the steering wheel sits dead centre of the seat, with the brake (the feel of which is very good) and accelerator pedals both offset to the right, exactly where you’d hope.

For most people looking a car of this type, practicality is probably one of your main priorities. In the back, adults can easily sit behind adults and the boot has a nice wide opening and opens electronically on all models. It is a golf club-accommodating 1300mm wide, and is almost a metre long with the rear seats in place. Folding them with one simple pull of a lever increases this to 1.8 metres, while load height to the ceiling is 800mm. As an option, you can specify rear seats that move forwards and backwards, and adjust the angle of their backrest. This allows you to prioritise passenger space or the boot capacity, depending on your requirements. Given all the main protagonists in this sector are almost the same length and width there is unsurprisingly little to choose between them in overall boot space.
