LIVE24SEVEN // Interviews

?’ ‘Is the atmosphere going to be incredible?’ because - I need that.

Now sort of touching back on to ‘Mixed Signals’ as you mentioned earlier, it was kindly given to you by The Killers via your producer Stuart Price, what track would you say in history that you would think ‘Actually you know, I wish I had nabbed that one’? Oh wow there’s just like WAY too many… I’d be pretty chuffed if I’d nabbed Bohemian Rhapsody

I think that’s the ultimate isn’t it really? Yeah that’s, yeah goes without saying, but there’s so many. The first one that comes to my mind is Bohemian Rhapsody.

What artists do you personally listen to? I listen to TalkSport! I genuinely do, and I listen to whatever I’ve just written try to think of how I could make it better, how I could whittle it and then when it’s whittled enough I then think of what album it’s going to go on, how it’s going to go on it, when, where. But apart from that, I like John Grant, he’s the last artist I took real notice of.

Regarding the different songs that you write, I think I remember reading that you wrote 80+ songs for The Heavy Entertainment Show. Do you think you’re going to save those for albums in the future? Oh they’ll see the light of day, hook or by crook, one way or another. They’re not just going to stay on my computer.

Going back to the subject that it was 20 years ago when you released ‘Life Thru a Lens’, now I guess this is probably going to be quite a hard question, but what advice as you now, would you give to yourself when you’re releasing your debut album? What advice would I give to myself when I was releasing my debut album? I wouldn’t give myself any advice when I was releasing my debut album, I’d give myself advice six albums in, and say ‘don’t over think this’. Just don’t over think; at one point I thought it was more important to be interesting than actually good. If I could go back in time and just say ‘Look, just do big songs. People love it, you love it, just don’t over think this’.

Now you performed on ‘Let It Shine’ last weekend alongside Gary, Howard and Mark. Now being sat at home watching it, you can sort of feel the electric atmosphere and it always feels so special to see you perform together. Does it feel like that for you as well as the audience? I was genuinely choked, there was genuinely a tear. I was genuinely overwhelmed with the love that beamed on us when we walked on stage. To see it in people’s eyes how much we mean to them and how much we’ve meant to them and how much we are the fabric of their lives and you know, and I instantly went on a time travelling journey in my mind and was overwhelmed by it. It was an incredible moment.

Especially performing ‘The Flood’ as that was the first song you released as a five-piece when you came back the second time, does that hold special meaning to you? I suppose that, but more so how good it is as a song, how great it is as a song. That was, it meant you know… it reminded how great it was as a song and that was more powerful than whatever time it came out at. It was just like ‘Wow, we did this, be proud’.

I think you’ve said in previous interviews there’s sort of like an invisible cord that ties you together with them, it that a fair way to say it in the fact you just keep coming back to them? That’s it, and so there is! There's an invisible cord that keeps pulling us back, and it's a cord I'm quite happy that the universe tugs occasionally.

So you’ll do more with them in the future? Absolutely. I would, if I was a betting man I would bet on that.
