WHAT’S NEWS & WHAT’S NEW IN DARTMOUTH

World Wide Knit in Public Day – 10 June Who even knew there was such a splendid idea for the

largest knitting event in the world! Dartmouth and Kingswear will be joining in this global event when it takes place at Coffee Couture at The Flavel and in The Flavel foyer between 10.30am and 4pm. The idea is for groups of knitters to work and chat and

invite any passers-by to sit and knit with them, too. There’ll be supplies of wool, needles and crochet hooks so people can be spontaneous and just join in with plans for a wool and pattern swap. If you’re unsure what to knit, join those making squares to go to the Knit A Square project for orphaned children in Africa; the more ambitious can tackle a beanie hat for the same cause. Please bring any wool you can donate with you on the day or pass to one of the organsers in advance. Any donations received on the day will go to help the invaluable local work of Rowcroft Hospice. Do drop by on the day for an hour or so to share in the

companionship, fun and general knitting mayhem.bIf you know you can make it, please email the organisers below to tell them when you can spare an hour, so a rough rota can be put in place. They look forward to seeing you on the day! Rose Williams, Jan Trevorrow, Yvonne Temple

Dartmouth & District Bridge Club Many years ago a group of friends decided that rather than play bridge at each other’s houses where the numbers were getting too large for most kitchens, it would be more sensible to find a venue and organise a proper club. Out of this grew the Bridge Club we have in Dartmouth today. Although not a properly constituted club but playing to rules laid down by the English Bridge Union, the club still holds true to its original ethos of enjoying competitive play in a friendly environment. The club meets twice a week at the Flavel, on a Tuesday afternoon, where the play is more focused on the fun of meeting friends and again on a Thursday evening for a longer session. Both meetings are played using duplicate scoring with results posted on their website the following day. A number of social functions are held for members during the year, including a summer BBQ and Christmas lunch and party. Partners can be arranged for single players and you can play up to four times during the year before being asked to join as a member. £2 table money is charged each session to cover room hire and annual membership is just £10 which allows the club to buy new tables etc. If you would like to join they will be pleased to see you.
