VISITING SHIPS T
his summer, we can look forward to nine cruise ship arrivals in Dartmouth, as well as a number of other interesting vessels to add to
the river backdrop. Right now, the arrival figures are improving from the lull of years past and at the moment, 2018 is also looking healthy. We know three things : that residents enjoy seeing
these vessels, that visitors come into Dartmouth specifically to look at them and that businesses in town may benefit, especially if they follow simple advice. We are at a point as a town where we decide if we
continue to pursue cruise companies and enjoy a steady stream of seasonal arrivals here. Popular cruise ports indicate that it is important to embrace the town institutions to see how we can work better collectively. For Dartmouth, funding will always be more of an issue than for privately run ports, but we can at least look at some of their processes and see if we have the means to adopt some ideas. Many ports have volunteer groups who act as
stewards on port days. Whilst we are lucky to have the services of a knowledgeable Tourist Information Centre member on all arrival days to give out maps and answer queries, some helping hands to guide passengers along the often crowded Town Jetty and up to their coaches, would add considerable value to the disembarkation process. Many ports flood the arrival area with cruise volunteers and it works well. They can also be an invaluable source of feedback from passengers, so that we can understand what they like - and don’t like - about their experience. As this very much varies from

from cruise passengers but industry figures indicate that with minimal input from shops, cafés and restaurants, there is most certainly money to be made (current global figures stand at an average of $80 per head). For the most part, even guests who go on excursions are given free time in the town and, on the jetty we actively encourage passengers to explore town - after all, they are already right in the centre of Dartmouth. Some South West ports have managed over the years to encourage businesses to advertise on local maps, to offer discount vouchers and to put welcome signs in their windows on cruise days. As a result of these gestures, cruise money does come into the town, helped along with a little encouragement and welcome from the community. We know from seeing people return to the ships that they really are willing to spend money with us and sometimes, we witness the slightly more unexpected requests for chandleries, items for crew members to purchase - and even see ships’ chefs coming ashore to buy local foods items for dinner. It will be good to see if Dartmouth can come together and discuss where the future lies and if we, as a town, can make cruise passengers feel welcomed and how, in turn, that gesture will bring benefits to businesses. Details of current arrivals are held at the Tourist Information Centre and online at the Dart Harbour’s website.
