Bouzy is one of the 17 Grand Cru villages in Champagne, a term referring to villages classified on the échelle des crus, which was used to determine the price of grapes. Although the system has now been abolished, these villages continue to enjoy a high level of prestige.

George Vesselle, one of 300 Champagne producers, is now run by his two sons who gave us a behind the scenes tour around the winery and chalk cellars which was an amazing experience. They produce 250,000 bottles of champagne a year made from 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. It has very fine bubbles and strong aromas of matured fruits. So delicious and different to the mass produced fizz widely available.
We explained to them how our business has expanded since Michael, Jonathan’s father visited Bouzy 20 years ago. For example, we now run educational events and were delighted when they agreed to host a dinner with matching champagnes on Tuesday 5th
With the popping of corks, there was a great festival feeling throughout Dartmouth that weekend particularly in the Mayor’s Avenue Gardens as dozens of music-lov- ers sat around on an array of colourful rugs surrounded by many other like-minded people. Food and wine were being handed around from well-stocked picnic baskets as everyone soaked up the sunshine and the sounds coming from the bandstand. This tranquil scene of an early summer reminded us of how lovely it is to share a bottle of wine with friends whether in a stunning setting by the River Dart or in our own back gardens.

Our 36 hours in the region was fantastic; we learnt so much and are very keen to return. We filled the car up to the gunnels with magnums, bottles and half bottles and Jonathan threatened to put me on the train so he could bring back even more!

Recently we were lucky enough to be asked to provide some George Vesselle Champagne for a Summer wedding. We thought that this was a brilliant opportunity to visit the producer whose Champagne we have been importing for the last 30 years. We left sunny Devon and drove to France where, just south of Reims, is a small quiet village aptly named Bouzy.
