Sailing in the Ionian Sea


UNFETTERED from the land, held only to earth by a hook dug into the sandy ocean bed, we woke on April Fool’s Day as wanderers once more. Six months after lassooing Leonie to one of the


orderly pontoons at Corfu’s Gouvia Marina we left our sheltered winter mooring for the bright, glistening Mediterranean Ionian Sea on a hot, sunny, still as a hunting heron, shorts and t-shirt day. We rose early breakfasting on toast, peanut butter


and steaming tea while on the move, motoring past the fortified grand old duchess of Corfu Town with her elegant Venetian-style balconied sun bleached apart- ments and classical Grecian columned public building, southwards parrallel with the tawdry tourist haunts of Benitses and Kavos. Fresh coffee and home-baked lemon buns broke up the three hour hop to the small fishing village of Petriti where we anchored in shallow waters near the harbour entrance and spent the night off the peaceful backwater bobbing at the whim of light winds. We had a spacious berth at Gouvia for most of


the winter but in the last few days of March the local charter company relaunched its myriad of yachts, packing the pontoons like sardines. It felt good to be back in the wide open sea again. We dodged the rainy season in Corfu when we came back to Dartmouth for six weeks over Christmas and
