SEVERAL GREAT WESTERN Shires meetings have been held since June, and the assistance from others in the area with organising our local gatherings continues! A few of us attended the Toddington GWSR event on 12 June organised by Peter Simpson, to display our cars alongside many other Clubs. It started with a horribly wet morning which put several intended participants off, but it did dry up quickly during the day. Fun was had on the steam and diesel trains to and from Cheltenham Racecourse. Defford Air Day at the end of June once again proved very popular, and we had eight cars in our line-up, although Terry was allowed into it with his

lovely little red Alfa. For several locals it was their first visit to Defford, and I think they will definitely be returning next year. The weather was generally kind, but with one or two torrential downpours which had everyone scurrying for cover in the ‘tea and cake’ hangar! Gerry and David were very surprised when trying to pay for coffees, as the serving staff simply said “give what you like as it is all for charity”.

Ian showed off his fancy purple matching table and chairs, with plenty of wine being supped, as we discussed how to fix his

brake switch! Gerry displayed his beautifully

reupholstered seats which were done by a specialist in Ross and look fantastic! As always we had some interesting

aircraft in and out most of the day. The XKEC flag had unfortunately not arrived in time but was put to good use as soon as possible!

Birlingham Car Show on the evening of 22 July was packed with more cars than ever, and well supported by Western Shires, including Terry, Malcolm and Martin (sphinx) popping down from Birmingham, who thoroughly enjoyed this

event and put some photos up on the Forum. I was whisked off to Cornwall at the last minute for a break organised by Pauline.

Bob kindly arranged a superb evening meal at The Chequers at Crowle at the end of July – we had nine members attending with their partners! It was a great opportunity for a few new members to join in even though we had a couple cry off at the last minute for various reasons.

Despite the rain I was determined to ‘get the XKEC flag out’, which gained some attention for our cars in the busy pub car park! Bob’s car had featured in Jaguar World magazine and he proudly brought along a beautiful large acrylic

mounted photo of his car alongside a much older silver XK150, which had appeared together in the magazine article. Pauline and I attended and thoroughly enjoyed a superb day at Arundel Castle on 13 August, the new Show & Shine venue, together with a few other Western Shires locals – what an idyllic setting in the sunshine for a display of 129 cars! No doubt we shall be returning in 2017. Once again we have had a couple of new local members joining in the last few months, and I have added them to my Western Shires e-mail circular to notify them of future events, as not all use or are comfortable finding their way around the Forum. You and your partners will always be very welcome to join us at any of the events.
