complicated instructions for extracting fuel were in a foreign language and total gobbledegook. We all made it, more or less together, to our hotel except for a group of cars from the South East that had apparently stopped en route for a three hour lunch! We dined together that evening (drinks included) and with a party of 46 we totally monopolised the dining room. Sadly all the other hotel guests had to make do with the breakfast room for dinner but most of them were driving BMW’s anyway.


Rest time: The three Js, Joyce, Jan and Jean, and something about when you’ve seen one castle . . .


The following morning the sun shone and it was a short drive (for most) to Haut- Koenigsbourgh Castle, main picture, which is one of the most popular monuments in France with 600,000 visitors per year. Built in the 12th century, the Castle occupied a strategic position. Its purpose was to watch over the wine (good call) and wheat routes to the North and the silver and salt routes from


West to East. It was reduced to ruins by the Swedes during the Thirty Years’ War and then abandoned. In 1899, Kaiser Wilhelm II

rebuilt the castle entirely with the aim of turning it into a museum and at the same time a symbol of Alsace’s (short lived) return to Germany. Although the Castle has been rebuilt recently, it faithfully respects the architecture of the Middle Ages. The afternoon plan was a visit to the Maginot Line but, like the Germans in WWII who went around it, we couldn’t go in, it was shut.
