‘The development

transformed what was a pretty poor and run down area of back land within the City Centre’

Car park design drives away with award win

SWH Civils’ project to construct Plymouth Coach Station’s new car park has won the prestigious Devon & Cornwall Concrete Society’s ‘Civil and Structural Concrete’ award. SWH Civils was appointed as the principal contractor under a design and

build contract by Plymouth City Council to construct Plymouth’s Coach Station. A new car park facility was also required as part of the project. SWH Civils was able to suggest solutions that were more cost effective,

time efficient, durable and to provide an aesthetically pleasing finish. The reinforced concrete walls around the car park were clad in matching concrete blocks. SWH Civils also masterminded the striking checkerboard finish of the Coach Station’s main concourse.

Mark Daley RIBA, speaking on behalf of the Devon & Cornwall Concrete

Society said: “The Plymouth Coach Station & Public Car Park Development transformed what was a pretty poor and run down area of back land within the City Centre into what is now a vibrant and uplifting public space. The project was achieved on both a tight budget and timescale by SWH Construction Ltd, and the results were to be much applauded.” Hannah Jones, Contracts Manager for SWH Civils and who oversaw the

project, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for us to make a positive impact on Plymouth’s future by delivering a much needed upgrade to the transport infrastructure of the city. To be recognised by the Concrete Society for our work is a real honour.”
