Get on your bike with a cycle scheme

for most people to buy a bike usually falls into one of two categories, either a bike for leisure or a bike to ride to work. While it’s obvious that one bike can be used for both, its amazing how different the decision making process can be. A bike for leisure is usually a purchase from the heart, with thoughts of sunny coastal roads and long sweeping descents. However, a bike for work is a purchase from the head - it’s going to get you through rush hour traffic, the odd rainy day and hopefully no punctures. While cycling for leisure is familiar ground for most people, cycling

to work is often uncharted territory. However Rockets & Rascals can assure you that cycling to work is hugely rewarding. Not only does it save you loads of money on parking, fuel and car running costs it also has many positive effects in terms of fitness and mental wellbeing - and of course reduced noise and lower pollution helps your community. You get to rev up and unwind from work and within days you’ll wonder why you ever drove. Many businesses and organisations now offer a cycle to work
scheme. The best of these is CycleScheme, who not only step in to assist many businesses but also work hard to help the retailer and customer too. For those unfamiliar with how it works, the employer purchases the bike for the employee and then spreads the cost of the bike over 12 months for the employee, taking it from their monthly salary. It benefits both sides, with the salary reduced (by the cost of the bike) the company sees a reduced NI contribution and for the employee the bike reduces the taxable salary so saves them the tax and NI on that portion of the wage. For a standard rate tax payer this is the equivalent of saving around 30% of the bike’s price and for the higher rate tax payer even more. Cyclescheme is required to process the sale and works with many
local retailers, including Rockets & Rascals to help the customer get their perfect bike. The team at Rockets & Rascals love it because it allows them to make sure their customers get the right bike, they get to try before they buy. Other schemes will prompt an order from a brochure which may not be suitable and often arrive by post rather than benefiting from the love and support of a local independent store. No matter where you live in
Devon there’s going to be a great independent bike store nearby, they’ll be able to help you choose a bike for work, maybe try a few out and if you need a little more help perhaps equip you with an electric bike, the happy middle ground between cycling and driving.
