What changes will the reforms bring?

Matt Maclean (pictured), Key Account Manager, City College Plymouth shares his thoughts on the apprenticeship reforms.

Whether we like it or not, apprenticeship reforms are happening and they are happening soon. From May 2017, the way apprenticeships are funded and paid for will change fairly dramatically - but will it really make much difference? Absolutely! I am not going to bore you with the ins and outs of the reforms - if you

want me to do that, get in touch and I will happily meet with you to run through it all. What I am going to do though is give you my own views on the impact I think they are going to have - cue statement that these views are my own and not that of my employer! The truth is that the reforms are a lot of smoke and mirrors. I am sure

there will be an increase in the take up of apprenticeships but, if the Government are to reach their own targets, then I believe this is likely to come about through existing staff undertaking higher-level apprenticeships as a form of continued professional development. Whilst this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it certainly won’t address the generational skills gaps in certain sectors.

‘High-quality apprenticeships are not inaccessible to those who have tried a few different careers before settling on one’
