Plymouth

As our increasingly connected world is changing the face of education and business, new methods are needed to ensure young people are developing the right skills for employment opportunities now and in the future. It has been widely recognised that existing formalised qualifications are

just one way for employers to match skills with the needs of their business. An increasing emphasis on attitude and aptitude is also required to adapt and thrive in today’s rapidly changing work environments. The core skills that employers desire have been captured in the ‘Plymouth Employability Passport’, a partnership project between business and education sectors.

- A city of learning

This gives students the chance to capture their strengths in key areas: team working, communication, customer service, business awareness, organisation, time management, problem solving and self-awareness. To develop this idea further, a new employability

initiative will provide opportunities to learn, earn and display digital badges that represent recognition of achievements, talents and skills. A network of learning providers will provide a wide range of access to activities through an online platform. This will allow young people to capture the breadth of their interests and promote the skills that employers desire. Employers will be able to see the pathways a young person has taken to achievement and this will be underpinned with the core skills needed for today's businesses. Think of it as a digitally enhanced CV, that provides a comprehensive snapshot of a person's qualities and skillsets. A digital badges ecosystem will

‘We aim to

provide learners of all ages access

provide a familiar environment for young people that meets their expectations in the online world. It also provides employers with the ability to easily see the issuer, criteria and evidence behind the badge. This approach will incentivise and engage potential employees and will help to grow your network of people with the skills to drive your business forward. In the first phase we’re focusing on the digital employability passport,

to ‘passion driven’ opportunities’

which will build on the success of the current passport. We're working closely with a number of local and regional partners to establish a city wide learning movement that celebrates the talent and skills in Plymouth and provides a mechanism for driving a connected place for learning for economic and cultural growth. The implications for a universal, accessible online platform to capture

and display skills across the city has potential to be far reaching. It aligns with the ‘Plan for Plymouth’ priorities around education, employability, skills as well as economic and cultural development. We want to mobilise a culture of learning supported by schools, colleges,

libraries, museums, workplaces, and youth, community and civic organisations. We aim to provide learners of all ages access to ‘passion driven’ opportunities through a technology platform which guides them to relevant learning in the city. Ultimately we have a vision for to engage all citizens in learning, most particularly those for whom traditional forms of learning are proving to be disengaging.
