FEATURE: APPRENTICESHIPS & TRAINING

The long-term approach to business growth

Last year Lewis Photiou joined Acronyms, a technology company in Plymouth, as part of his apprenticeship course. He was studying towards an IT Pro Comp Level 3 qualification through Achievement Training and after achieving distinctions in all three of his technical certificate exams, Lewis was offered a full time role. In a short space of time Lewis has grown into an

integral part of the Acronyms team, offering technical support to customers across the South West, both remotely and on-site. Support Director, Dave Parker, who is Lewis’ direct manager, fully believes in the apprenticeship model. “Acronyms takes the long term view that it is important to invest in skills for the future of our company. Apprenticeships enable us to recruit people with the right attitude and enthusiasm, who want to succeed, qualities Lewis demonstrated throughout his apprenticeship. It’s a long-term approach that I’d recommend to any business.” The benefits of hiring Lewis an as apprentice were

clear from the start. His earliest notable success was finding an opportunity to improve Acronyms’ efficiency. He personally proposed, developed and implemented a

new internal process for setting up new computers across the business. Throughout the apprenticeship, his initiative kept

shining through. Acronyms rewarded this by making Lewis fundamental to a client project to roll out over 100 mobile devices across the country. All of these devices had bespoke IT security software implemented on them, allowing the workforce to securely work on the go, making a multimillion pound business more agile, secure and efficient. Lewis himself is in no doubt, of how useful an

apprenticeship was for his career. “By becoming an apprentice at Acronyms I had the opportunity to learn first-hand from senior professionals. Combined with regular college lessons, the apprenticeship gave me the right mix of practical and theoretical learning.”
