district heat and power project in Gateshead has unlocked a £1million boost to its revenue after becoming a partner of demand response company, Flexitricity.

Gateshead Energy Company is the operator of the Gateshead District Energy Scheme, which will provide low- cost, low-carbon heat and power to homes, public build- ings and businesses across the centre of Gateshead. The scheme is currently being commissioned, and will be fully operational by mid-2017. Becoming part of Flexitricity’s demand response network means the publicly-owned project will receive in excess of £60,000 per year over the next 15 years, simply by using its flexibility to smooth out peaks and troughs in national electricity demand.
Gateshead Council owns both the District Energy Scheme and Gateshead Energy Company. Leader of the Council, Martin Gannon, said: “Once we realised that we could bring more revenue into the project by providing capacity to the National Grid – without changing our day- to-day operations – the decision was made for us. “It’s win-win for ourselves and our customers. Not only does it support our business model of providing low cost, low carbon energy to homes, organisations and business- es, but Flexitricity’s system works seamlessly with our own, meaning we can provide heat and power to our customers while supporting critical national infrastructure.” Gateshead Energy Company’s combined heat and power (CHP) system will add 4MW of electricity generating capacity to National Grid. Within Flexitricity’s portfolio, the Gateshead CHP will form part of a virtual power station that’s big enough to make a real difference to bills while helping to keep the lights on nationwide. The system also helps the Grid absorb periods of excess supply from renewables, putting wind and solar energy to good use and supporting district energy schemes like Gateshead at the same time.
The contract is worth about £32m to Aggreko, which is one of the world's largest temporary power providers. It pulled out of a tender to supply generators to the 2016 Rio Olympics. Aggreko will be a sponsor for the Pyeongchang Olympics as part of the deal, the company reports.

Aggreko has provided similar services for a number of major sports events, includ- ing the nine Olympic and Paralympic Games, five FIFA World Cups, five previous Ryder Cups in Europe and The XX Commonwealth Games.
In 2014 Aggreko provided 17 MW of power and back-up support for the Ryder Cup on location at Gleneagles, and also ensured a tented village, hospitality units, media centre and other temporary infra- structure were fully-powered and air conditioned.
Sheffield service since 2001, as part of a contract set for 35 years. However city officials say difficult financial times have prompted a vote to opt out, with a view to securing a ‘new and improved’ con-
tract.Councillors have already voted to re-tender the contract, which was valued at £1.3 billion when it began 16 years ago.
The council has confirmed that it will seek a new contract with separate lots for collections, HWRC manage- ment and operations of the 50,000 tonnes-per-year energy from waste plant on Bernard Road as well as its district heating network. Veolia said in a statement:
“We have been a major investor in Sheffield, outper- forming our contractual objectives and achieving close to landmark ‘zero waste to landfill’, whilst generating direct financial benefits.”
Largest fuel cell installation in the UK to take place at Scotland’s new AECC
he new £333 million Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) is to have the largest fuel cell installation in the UK and on a par with the largest in Europe. Doosan Babcock is to supply the low emission fuel cells after a ground-breaking deal that will see the creation of a dedicated on-site Energy Centre to provide power, heat, and cooling to the new world-class AECC. Providing a total electrical output of 1.4MW, the AECC Energy Centre will also reinforce Aberdeen's status as Europe's Energy Capital.
T
Aberdeen City Council Leader Councillor Jenny Laing said: “I am delighted that Doosan Babcock are to provide such an innovative part of the new AECC. The new AECC will be a modern and fit-for-purpose facility, attracting bigger names in entertainment and more major international events and conferences to the north-east, so it is fitting that it will be leading in fuel cell technology. 'The venue will be a fantastic asset for Aberdeen as part of the City Council's Strategic Infrastructure Plan, and it is great that such an experienced company in Doosan Babcock will be a part of our city's future.'”
The new exhibition and conference centre for Aberdeen and the north east will generate 600 new jobs during the construction period and 352 full-time-equivalent permanent positions by year 10 of operations, and is a key element of Aberdeen City Council's Strategic Infrastructure Plan to grow and bolster the local economy. It will anchor existing international events and competing nationally and internationally for new events, as well as by broadening the appeal of the north-east to a global audience. Over the next 10 years, the new AECC is expected to attract major artists and events to the
city, and contribute an additional 4.5 million visitors, £113 million of visitor spend and £63m net GVA to the Scottish economy. Due to open in 2019, the new venue situated beside Aberdeen International Airport will provide four times the exhibition space available at the current AECC, and increase the maximum capacity to 12,500 in the arena.
