Turner EPS supplies standby genset to Manchester

GENSETS

In a contract worth well over £500,000, Turner EPS recently installed a data centre located in Manchester with a new fullyintegrated generating set to provide emergency standby power in case of outages, reports UKPN.

company recipient cannot be named at this stage.

With this project the original 1750 kVA genset had been configured to provide power for the Critical Loads only.

However, by

synchronising both sets together, the new genset was designed to supply power to the whole of the data centre in the event of a power outage. By also synchronising with the mains power supply the new genset would have the ability to provide a ‘no break return’ on full restoration of power to the site.

The contract - worth between £500k - £750k - involved supplying standard equipment but with uprated output. The new equipment was set up to integrate with the existing systems without any disruption to the site. Turner EPS proposed an innovative and

cost-effective power solution, reports the company. As a result, the client made a decision to replace the existing older and underpowered unit for a genset proposed by Turner EPS. The idea was to provide a fully-integrated matching system comprising modern equipment with up-to-date controls. The installation and commissioning of the new generating sets was carried out by engineers from Turner EPS and its supply chain partners on time and within budget,

exceeding the customer’s expectations, says the company.

The use of cost-effective generators’ ‘batch in line resulted in an increased

specification which provided a fully upgraded robust and reliable system, reports Turner EPS.

In addition to the installation, Turner introduced the concept of Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR) to its Manchester- based client.

This is a system which allows fixed standby generating assets to be utilised to provide power for the National Grid when the system is “stressed’. This not only resulted in a fully- monitored system at no additional cost, it also resulted in Carbon Savings and cash payments which were enough to cover the capital expenditure on the equipment and installation in under 10 years. The STOR Concept has also been adopted at other sites and is said to be producing additional revenue from existing assets with no increase in maintenance costs. Turner EPS is one of Europes largest single source providers of solutions, systems and services for power generation involving diesel and gas engine reciprocating engines, explosion protection solutions, microturbine technology, combined heat & power (CHP) and UPS systems for critical installations. Initially founded in 1912 as a supplier to the emerging automotive industry, the Turner Group has evolved through steady organic growth as well as acquisition.
