JCB CELEBRATES TWO KEY ANNIVERSARIES

Ramping up infrastracture for the Football World Cup to be held in Qatar 2022: UK’s HOBUT & ARAP involved

J

CB Power Products has marked two special anniversaries this January 2017 - with a cake big enough to feed the whole workforce. It is 10 years since JCB Power Products produced and sold the first JCB generator to coincide with the launch of the JCB engine. It is also a year since the acquisition of major UK producer of diesel generators Broadcrown Ltd was completed.

The milestones were celebrated at JCB Power Products’ plant in Hixon near Stafford by the employees who assem- bled on the shop floor to enjoy a slice from a giant cake baked in the shape of a generator. Mark Turner, Group Managing Director – Business Operations, said: “This has been an exciting 12 months. When I look around the world where we now have genera- tor businesses, it’s evident that JCB Power Products will be a big part of our future.” JCB Power Products MD Jonathan Garnham said: “It is 10 years since JCB went into power generation to coincide with the launch of the four cylinder diesel engine. We grew the business quickly and with the opportunity for us to come together a year ago with Broadcrown, we have really started to go from strength-to-strength now.” JCB Power Products offers an extensive range of high specification diesel generators to meet customer requirements for any power application globally. According to the company, each JCB generator is built to the ‘highest specification to deliver outstanding reliability, high performance and increased efficiency’. A spokesman commented: “JCB are trusted around the world to deliver power for both prime and standby power applications into construction and rental industries, agricul- tural sectors and for use as back-up power supply for commercial applications such as hospitals, offices and data centres.”

A major new project has been awarded to HOBUT - Howard Butler (HOBUT) Ltd. of Walsall, Birmingham. Current Transformers from its range are now being used extensively in the key ramp- up of infrastructure in Qatar ahead of the 20122 Football World Cup in Qatar.

Measuring, Protection and Class X transformers from HOBUT can be seen being built into new LV and MV installations in Qatar, reports the company. HOBUT is one of the largest UK manufactur- ers and suppliers of panel

meters, current transformers, shunts and associated products. The company has been manufacturing in the UK for over 100 years and has built up a reputation for quality products.

With a population of 2 million people, Qatar will be the first Arab state to host the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup to be held in June and July. During this period the average daytime high in most of Qatar exceeds 50 °C (120 °F), the average daily low tempera- tures not dropping below 30 °C (86 °F). The first five proposed stadiums for the

event were unveiled at the beginning of March 2010. Each stadium will employ cooling technology capable of reducing temperatures within the stadium by up to 20°C (36°F).

The new upper tiers of the stadia will be disassembled after the World Cup and donated to countries with less developed sports infrastruc- ture, says the government. All of the 5 stadium projects launched have been designed by German architect Albert Speer & Partners. The Air Conditioning units in the stadiums for both the players and spectators will be solar - powered, carbon-neutral and provided by the UK’s Arup. Each of the five stadia will harness the power of the sun's rays to provide a cool environment for players and fans by converting solar energy into electricity that will then be used to cool both fans and players at the stadia. When games are not taking place, the solar installations at the stadia will export energy onto the power grid. During matches, the stadia will draw energy from the grid. This is the basis for the stadia's carbon-neutrality. Along with the stadia, the authorities plan to make the key cooling technologies developed in Qatar available to other countries in hot climates, so that they too can host major sporting events.
