Bryland Fire works on PenYClip Tunnel

he Pen-Y-Clip tunnel on the A55 close to Penmaenmawr in North Wales is a road tunnel opened in late 1993 and is approx. 934m long. It is operated on a daily basis by Costain on behalf of the Highways Agency. The tunnel support services (lights, ventilation, emergency phones etc) are supported by the two Tunnel Support Buildings, one at each end of the tunnel (named East and West) and when the requirement came to upgrade the backup generators and their rooms, a requirement for Gas Fire Suppression was immediately identified to protect the continuity of the facilities, keeping drivers safe during their journey through the tunnels.

T

Dale honoured by HRH Princess Anne for using training to boost sustainable business growth

A specification was put together by the consultants, which identified IG55 Inert Gas – something that Bryland Fire Protection - based in Dudley in the West Midlands - was very familiar with. To everybody’s surprise, MICC (Mineral Insulated Copper Cable or Pyro as it used to be known) was specified for all the interconnections on the two Fire Suppression Systems.

MICC cable has all but been superseded by soft-skinned FP200 cable on most projects these days, but in some environments like these where the cable are liable to attack from an aggressive atmosphere (it is literally yards from the North Wales coast) it is still asked for.

Dale Power Solutions is one of the first companies in the UK to be awarded with the newly initiated Princess Royal Training Award in recognition of their outstanding training and skills development pro- grammes. Dale Power Solutions is celebrating with 33 other well-known and pres- tigious UK based businesses including Mercedes-Benz, National Grid and IBM UK Ltd. The City & Guilds Group launched the Awards in January 2016. They were developed in conjunction with

employers, learning and development experts and assessors, and endorsed by the City & Guilds Group’s President, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. In total, 110 organisations applied for the Awards in their inaugural year. The Awards reflect the

Group’s history of recognising achievement in training, as well its solid commitment to pioneering skills develop- ment. The successful organisations all demonstrat- ed that training and skills

development can make a significant impact on produc- tivity and business success. Each application was assessed against three ‘Hallmarks of Excellence’ by the Princess Royal Training Awards Commission. The Commission comprised of ten leading figures in the business and learning and development community, as well as HRH The Princess Royal.

The Commission saw Dale Power Solutions as:- “An example of how a company undertook succession plan- ning to address the challenges of a remote loca- tion and an ageing workforce. The resulting Apprenticeship programme is flexible, inclusive and has 100% retention rate – even the CEO is a former apprentice.” Speaking about the winners, City & Guilds Group Chief Executive, Chris Jones commented:

“Excellence doesn’t happen by chance. In today’s uncertain economy, more than ever, employers must align investment in training to the objectives of their business. Whether they’ve addressed a skills gap, improved productivity or developed new leaders to grow their businesses, all the awarded organisations deserve to be recognised for their achievements.”

Bryland

had the engineers with the knowledge and experience to install a first rate project, reports the company. The project was delivered by Bryland Fire’s Senior Project Manager Stewart Houghton. He commented: ‘‘I was very surprised to see that the project was to be installed using MICC, it was all the rage in the 1980s, but we still have engineers who are experienced enough to install it to the manufacturers’ requirements, and just as importantly make it look good. We had the Over Pressure Dampers colour co-ordinated to the customer’s colour requirement RAL number which kept the outside of the two buildings looking great too. These were great contracts which were delivered very smoothly to Costain’s dates – the customer was a dream to work with too!‘‘ With nearly 50 years’

experience, Bryland Fire

Protection regarded itself as a specialist in all things fire-related, from alarms and extinguishers through to fire suppression, servicing and training.
