Edina recognised for work on London’s CHP Citigen project

Edina provided the key CHP technology for London Citigen, a large scale community energy system made up of a central power station and district heating network. Today, the natural gas CHP plant, located near Smithfield Market, supplies heat and cooling to ten of the City’s properties via an underground pipe network spanning over two miles wide.

dina has been recognised at this years’ Association of Decentralised Energy (ADE) Awards, winning the ‘Integrated Energy Project of the
Year’ category award with district heating project London Citigen. In partnership with E.ON Community
Energy, London Citigen is a large scale com- munity energy system made up of a central power station and district heating network. The natural gas combined heat and power plant located near Smithfield Market and situ- ated within the Port of London Authority and neighbouring Central Cold Storage buildings in the borough of Islington, supplies heat and cooling to ten of the City’s properties by an underground pipe network spanning over two miles.
ADE Director, Tim Rotheray, said; "The Integrated Energy award recognises projects where a range of different technologies or approaches have been brought together to create an integrated solution.
“Regeneration means different things to
different people, but it’s probably an apt word to use for the winner in this category. This project provided a new lease of life to an existing energy asset, and if anything their award entry downplayed how difficult this project clearly was."
The award ceremony took place on the evening of Wednesday 23rd November, 2016, at London’s National History Museum with over 400 guests who celebrated innovation, best practice and achievements across combined heat and power, district heating, demand response and energy services. This prestigious award builds on Edina’s industry success in delivering recognised projects across the UK, Ireland and recently in Australia with organics processor Richgro. During last years’ award ceremony, Edina won the ‘Industrial and Commercial Project of the Year’ category award with project entry Arla Foods. The project demonstrated Edina’s capabilities and technical expertise in designing and supplying a CHP plant that included an innovative natural gas / biogas integration system. Edina’s involvement in the project contributed significantly to Arla Food’s long term environmental strategy and their purpose built site at Aylesbury has become the world’s first zero carbon dairy production facility.
Edina also sponsored the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ category award which was awarded to Lucy Padfield from Islington Council. The ADE commented, "Throughout her career Lucy Padfield has been determined to reduce fuel poverty while using waste heat innovatively to benefit the
community".
