Durapipe puts safety first at Alder Hey

real back-up. This is where Eagle Generators has the experience and capability to help you out. We have a range of new and pre-owned diesel generator sets to meet your specific power require- ments.”

'Blackout Friday' in Central London as power cut hits a West End ‘night out’ on November 25th, 2016

D

urapipe UK, a world pioneer in the development and manufacture of thermoplastic pipe systems, has been involved in the major £237m project to build Alder Hey in the Park, with two of its pipework systems installed at the hospital. Built in the grounds of Springfield Park, the new hospital has become the UK’s first integrated children’s health park. Designed in consultation with patients and their families, the 51,000m2 facility will comprise 270 beds and 16 state- of-the-art operating theatres. As with any healthcare facility, reliable products and systems are vital to the successful operation of Alder Hey in the Park - with pipework no exception - Vulcathene and PLX systems have both been installed extensively throughout the new hospital buildings. A

spokesman told UKPN: "Our specialist fuel conveyance system, PLX, was installed to serve the hospital’s backup power system. The efficient running of medical equipment and apparatus is imperative to the successful care of the children being treated at the hospital and so fuel-powered generators have been installed to ensure medical equipment can remain fully operational at all times in the event of a mains power failure. “Durapipe PLX secondary contained pipe-in-pipe has been installed to safely carry diesel fuel from the main fuel storage tank to the boiler room to feed the generators in the event of an emergency. Selected due to its high performance properties, PLX boasts a visible barrier layer allowing increased resistance to all types of fuel blends, ensuring there is no permeation of fuel through to the atmosphere."

Durapipe PLX [below] is manufactured by pipework specialist Durapipe UK, a specialist company involved in the manufacture and the development of thermoplastic pipe systems. The company offers a large portfolio of innovative products manufactured to the highest standards; it currently supplies a wide variety of different markets and applications around the world.

Black Friday became a reality in London’s West End on 25th November, 2016, as a fault on a high voltage cable cut off power to businesses around Piccadilly Circus, Soho and Carnaby Street. The power failure left the streets in dark- ness, stopped performances of the major West End shows and closed down many hundreds of restaurants. A spokesman for Eagle Generators Ltd points out: “Interestingly the sound of Underground trains could still

be heard because Transport for London has a robust back- up plan to deal with such situ- ations. So if your business is totally reliant on the power grid but you have always thought “it can’t happen here”, maybe you should think again.”

He continues: “If your own company is going for ISO 9001 certification then you will need to show what your contingency plans are. And, of course, if you want production or operations to carry on then you’ll definitely need some

With a headquarters and warehouse situated in Oldbury, near Birmingham, Eagle Generators has a load testing facility of its own. The company specialises in the sales of UK manufactured world-class generating sets (from 9 kva to 2250kva) which incorporate the latest technol- ogy from Perkins, Cummins and F.G. Wilson. The West End power cut, which started at 5.16pm, mainly hit Soho, which was packed with tourists, shoppers and people enjoying the area’s bars and restau- rants.

The lights were back on at 9pm and other shows including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child were able to go ahead with a delayed start. UK Power Network has revealed that the disruption was due to a faulty piece of equipment on its underground electricity network. A spokesperson said: “All power supplies were restored by 9pm. We apologise for the impact this incident caused and for the inconvenience.” The company had earlier said that 2,300 properties were affected.

ENERG is highly commended for innovation in CHP emissions reduction

ate 2016 saw ENER-G Highly Commended in the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) Innovation Award for its success in reducing CHP emissions. ENER-G's UK expert research, development, engineering and manufacturing teams have designed and developed a new range of 'ultra-low' NOx Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems.

L

The technology is achieving emissions levels five times lower than the most widely accepted limit and half of the most stringent limit set by BREEAM and the

Greater London Authority (GLA). The in-house team has dramatically reduced NOx emissions across its 50kWe to 230kWe fleet to less than 50mg/Nm3 @ 5% O2. Remarkably, this excep- tionally low level will be sustained throughout the lifetime of the catalyst and without the extra cost and bulk of using external NOx abatement equipment. This ensures a much safer emis- sions level than was reviously possible for small scale CHP. Ian Hopkins, Sales and Marketing Director for ENER-G said: "Most CHP suppliers achieve lower NOx levels by using external SCR (Selective catalytic reduction), which adds significantly to capital cost and increases the size and footprint of the system. This has been avoided by ENER-G, thus creating a cost effective, clean energy system that can meet the strictest emissions standards anywhere in the world. We were delighted to gain recognition in 2016 from the energy industry for our achievement."

ENER-G has achieved a dramatic reduction in NOx reductions while preserving high system

efficiency. As such, high efficiency (circa 80-90%) and carbon saving benefits of up to 30% are being maintained. The low-NOx CHP fleet also qualifies for maximum credits under the revised BREEAM standard. It is also fully compliant with the Code for Sustainable Homes and Clean Air Act..

For CHP systems with an electrical output above 230kWe, ENER-G can incorporate external NOx abatement technology, such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR). This can bring the NOx emissions level down as low as 10mg/Nm3, when necessary. As the only UK CHP supplier to design, engineer and manufacture CHP systems under one roof in the UK, ENER-G is able to continuously innovate and speedily develop ever cleaner and greener products.
