bmi regional is expanding its flight portfolio in the Midlands
DHL’s event highlighted the vast opportunities for exporting on the back of Leicester City’s title
Legacy of football success
A panel of experts have gathered at the King Power Stadium to discuss the impact Leicester City Football Club’s year of success has had on Leicestershire. ‘Putting Leicester on the Map’ was organised by DHL,
the club’s Official Logistics Partner. Senior figures from local businesses, Leicester City FC and Ernst & Young discussed the tangible and intangible benefits as part of a panel moderated by David Simms, Managing Director of the Leicester Mercury. The audience heard from David Mullen of Ernst &
Young, which recently conducted an assessment of the economic impact of the Premier League. The report calculated that the Leicester City’s title win added around £140m to the local economy, supported 2,500 jobs and brought in £78m in tax revenue.
He suggested to delegates that this season’s UEFA Champion League campaign could also attract up to 10,000 additional visitors to the region, benefiting local hotels and restaurants. Neil Kuschel, Vice-President for Sales at DHL Express
UK, emphasised that the Premier League win has meant that Leicester has “become a brand – it’s no longer just a place name.” His advice to Leicester businesses was to use that
recognition now, given there is a growing middle class around the world looking to buy goods and services. He told delagates: “You look at Asia, China and India
and these countries are mad on football. So now that they know you guys it puts your foot in the door. It’s a fantastic opportunity.”
Birmingham bmi hub launches new flights
bmi regional is creating a new hub at Birmingham airport, launching three new European routes from the UK’s second city in the process. The new routes to Graz, Austria, Nuremburg, Germany and Gothenburg, Sweden will start in early 2017. Jochen Schnadt, Chief
Commercial Officer at bmi regional, said: “We are delighted to be introducing new flights as part of our ever expanding portfolio. “bmi regional has always offered
customers an array of up and coming destinations to explore and enjoy, and we anticipate all three routes to be popular. “We’re happy to once again be
bringing the bmi regional level of quality, convenience and professionalism to travellers from the Midlands.”
