INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Just a fraction into 2017 and Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) is already looking at ways to help local businesses grow internationally. Midlands companies are being given the opportunity to meet potential new business partners during the first trade mission of the year to Romania, which takes place 27-30 March. Since accession to the European Union in 2007, Romania has undergone
something of a minor economic miracle, enjoying a substantial improvement in the standard of living and boasting impressive rates of real-term economic growth. With GDP rising by an enviable 5.2% in 2016, this places Romania among the fastest-growing economies in Europe. The mission has been put together with automotive and
advanced engineering companies in mind and will take in the cities of Timisoara and Craiova. Both cities are automotive and engineering hubs and boast some of the sectors largest manufacturers and their associated supply chains. The East Midlands’ dominant sector, transport and machinery equipment,
witnessed encouraging export growth to Romania throughout 2016, with orders increasing by 32% in the first three quarters of the year in comparison to the same period in 2015. The Romanian automotive sector has enjoyed significant levels of foreign direct investment from major manufacturers in recent years, fuelling growth and creating opportunities for East Midlands companies to feed into the supply chain. Flying out from the UK on the evening of Monday 27 March to Timisoara, participants will arrive and check into their nominated hotel. Tuesday 28 March will give delegates the opportunity to meet with representatives of the West Regional Development Agency, who will deliver a market briefing
and Q&A, equipping attendees with all the information they need prior to meeting potential business partners that afternoon. Wednesday 29 March will see the delegates visit the Regional Competence
Centre for Supplier Development in the Automotive Sector, a new centre dedicated to supporting the implementation of services and training programmes for enterprises in this lucrative sector, programmes which will ensure Timisoara remains at the forefront of automotive innovation. This will be followed by a visit to a Tier 1 automotive supplier close by. Delegates will then travel to Craiova, where they will be able to rest before the mission resumes the next day. Thursday 30 March will take in more pre-arranged B2B
meetings with Romanian automotive companies, followed by a visit to another established automotive or advanced engineering company to demonstrate the benefits of doing business in this part of Romania. Delegates will fly back to the UK that afternoon. Speaking ahead of the visit, Jan Immel (pictured), International
Programmes Manager at Enterprise Europe Network East Midlands, said: “Romania offers fantastic opportunities in the automotive industry. With impressive growth rates, a buoyant manufacturing sector and an appreciation for British goods, conditions are prime for this market visit to be a resounding success and I look forward to supporting companies from across the region as they use it as a gateway to securing business in Romania.”

Are trade missions for me?
Trade missions are a great way to find out more about a particular target market and meet potential partners with minimal investment. The programme, tailored to one or two particular sectors, is
organised in advance and designed for delegates to completely immerse themselves in the marketplace and business culture of the country they are visiting. Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) combines agreed pre-arranged meetings with potential business partners and visits to high profile companies that are already successful in the market, with the opportunity to network with your peers from the UK. EEN will work closely with you to understand your business needs
and objectives for joining the mission and ensure the trip is as efficient as possible and that you meet only overseas companies relevant to your business. EEN is able to help organise flights and accommodation for the trip
and at least one member of staff will travel to support you logistically. Following a recent trade mission to China that he attended, David
Pearson, Head of International Trade (Partnerships) at the Chamber, said: “The trade mission has been a thoroughly worthwhile exercise and use of my time. I would also certainly encourage businesses to consider trade missions as a way of building their international capabilities. These trips help to open doors that might otherwise remain closed.”
