APPRENTICESHIPS Under the new Government scheme for funding


apprenticeships, via the Employer Levy, all apprentice training will be funded at the same base rate. There will be 15 different funding bands where the Government has set a maximum amount payable for the training for an apprentice, however, it should be noted that employers are able to negotiate a price for training with their chosen training provider should they choose that route, rather than delivering a training programme themselves. A major factor affecting all companies is whether or not


they will have to contribute to the levy. It will only be paid by companies with an annual pay bill in excess of £3m, and for those companies a Government allowance of £15,000 will be available, which reduces the amount payable. For the levy-paying companies, the cost of training will be


met by the funds in the new Digital Account. For companies not in the levy-paying bracket their funding arrangements are such that the Government will pay for 90% of the cost of the training with the Company required to pay the ten per cent balance. If a company is in the levy-paying bracket, their apprenticeship training costs exceeds the amount of ‘levy’ payable and their ‘digital voucher’ value, the arrangements will be that the extra funds required will be treated in the same way as the system for non-levy paying employers. The additional funds required in this case will therefore be


paid at 90% by the Government and ten per cent by the company. It is most likely that the cost for training and payment


arrangements for any apprentice, regardless of whether for a levy-paying company or not, will follow the method that the Government has planned to pay their 90% contribution for those in that eligibility bracket. The system that is being implemented for all new apprentices starting from 1 May 2017 is an equal monthly payment spread across the planned number of months that the training is scheduled for.
