GEOFF POYZER, Chamber President, on the issues that are worth talking about

It has been wonderful to meet so many of you at recent Chamber events since becoming President. In these uncertain times many of you have discussed your views on Brexit and the American Presidential Elections. Your views have been loud and clear, that business needs greater clarity around the guiding principles of Trade, People, Taxation and Customs, Regulation and Funding.

POSITIVE QES Q4 RESULTS It was very pleasing to read the positive figures coming out of the Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey for Q4 2016. It is extremely encouraging to note that, despite the

uncertainty of recent months, businesses here in the East Midlands – which make such a significant contribution to the country as a whole – are reporting excellent current operating conditions as well as an optimistic outlook as we move further into the new year and it is a trend I hope will continue ahead of the Quarterly Economic Survey for Q1 2017. Both domestic and overseas markets were positive in the

final quarter of 2016, with 43% of firms reporting improved domestic performance and 40% reporting improved overseas sales. Equally, 62% of respondents said they expected turnover

to increase in the next 12 months, 50% said they anticipated profitability would increase. The Chamber's Quarterly Economic Survey is the region’s

barometer of business confidence, with the views of its members extremely important in shaping future policy. For more information on QES, visit bit.ly/ChamberQES. A comprehensive look at the 2016 QES Q4 results are available on p14.

A GREAT PLACE TO DO BUSINESS It was great to see the Midlands being championed in a debate at Westminster Hall, with the Chamber, local MPs and LEPs all in attendance, following the delivery of the Prime Minister’s Industrial Strategy Green Paper. The East Midlands, specifically, has quite rightly earned a

reputation for being a fantastic place to do business. As the Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has commented in the past, our region is a bellwether for the UK economy. On a separate business leaders trip to Westminster to

launch the Chamber’s eight-page report – Shaping a Great Future for the East Midlands: Leading Balanced and Sustainable Growth in a Post-Brexit Economy, the

58 business network February 2017

Chamber’s Director of Policy, Chris Hobson, as well as myself, spoke of the unique selling points of the East Midlands and that, as a region, we are well placed to cope with the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Throughout my tenure as Chamber President I look

forward to emphasising what a tremendous place the East Midlands is in which to do business.

A WORTHY SET OF CHARITIES It gave me great pleasure as one of my first duties as

President to present three very worthwhile charities - Ashgate Hospice, Chesterfield, RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire and Rainbow’s Hospice, Loughborough - with much-needed donations, with each receiving £821.33 as part of the East Midlands Chamber Charitable Fund, administered by the Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation. I also had the honour of naming LOROS, Maggie’s

Nottingham and Blythe House Hospice as the charities to which the Chamber will donate in 2017. Charities rely on donations for their survival and whether

it is a large or small amount I would encourage businesses to take part in events that help to raise money for charities during the year.

CHAMBER ANNUAL DINNER The Chamber’s Annual Dinner is its flagship business event of the year and I thoroughly enjoyed the 2016 event, which saw over 500 of the region’s most prominent business people attend a memorable night at the Roundhouse, Derby. This year is likely to see even more attending and it will

be an honour to be there in my role as Chamber President. Following on from last year’s success, the 2017 Annual

Dinner will once again be at the Roundhouse and I look forward to meeting with representatives from the fantastic member companies we have in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. For further information and to book your place, or a table of ten at a discounted rate, please visit the Chamber’s website.
