Start-ups scale new heights

As Birmingham experiences more start-up growth than anywhere else in the UK, the delivery of a first- of-its-kind co-working space is set to galvanise the city’s pool of entrepreneurial talent. Property company CEG is investing £1m in Alpha

Works, delivering 14,000 sq ft of office space in the iconic Alpha Birmingham targeted at smaller businesses and start-ups. Set to launch in March 2017, the space will provide a creative and collaborative working environment for the city’s new breed of entrepreneurial businesses. Offering everything from hot desks to private offices,

Alpha Works will provide flexible workspaces for businesses looking to collaborate, create and grow. As well as a contemporary styled design from award winning architects ORMS - with an impressive reception

and event space, breakout areas and fully equipped meeting rooms – members will benefit from fast superfast broadband/Wi-Fi, a community social media platform, competitive rates and its central location. Since it acquired Alpha in 2014, CEG has embarked

on a £1m refurbishment of the 28 storey landmark, including the delivery of a new reception, independent café, cycle and shower facilities. Lawrence Escott, investment manager at CEG, said:

“CEG is very excited to bring a new workspace to the Birmingham market. We saw a clear need to create a flexible, unique, well designed and competitive space, one that is not only located in a place that inspire and nurtures creativity but one that provides the space to work with and alongside other likeminded people to share ideas and collaborate.”

property management consultancy team has been appointed by developer TCN UK to provide service charge and management regime for the building, rebranded as Assay Studios. Assay Studios is situated on

Newhall Street in the building formerly occupied by the historic and world-renowned Assay Office. Guy Thompson, senior director

at GVA, said: “TCN’s approach is very much that Assay Studios is not your average office space. “We’ve worked closely with them

throughout this process to ensure that we can deliver a programme for the building that integrates seamlessly with their positioning of the Assay Studios as a forward- thinking development that encourages collaboration and knowledge sharing.” TCN UK purchased the Grade II

listed Assay Building in 2014 and invested £4m to regenerate it into 30,000 sq ft of creative office space, for Birmingham’s burgeoning tech and media industry.
