Chamber Expo makes 2017 return

Chamber Expo – showcasing the region’s talents and business expertise - is back for 2017. More than 500 delegates and 80

exhibitors are expected to attend Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce’s Spring Expo, which is taking place on 3 March at the Birmingham Conference and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) in Hill Street. GBCC chief executive Paul Faulkner said:

“Chamber Expo is a fantastic opportunity for delegates and exhibitors from across the region to showcase their businesses. “The 2016 Autumn Expo at the

Barclaycard Arena was our biggest and best yet and hopefully we can build on the success of the October event.”

Chamber goes on tour

Greater Birmingham Chambers has launched its 2017 events calendar, which is for the first time going ‘on tour’ during the year. Events such as speaker breakfasts, speed

networking, social networking, business growth seminars and ‘Making the Most of Your Membership’, will be held in different Chamber regions during the year. As a result, regions such as Lichfield and

Tamworth, Chase and Burton, will get to host more events during the calendar year. These regions will still host their regular

flagship events, such as the Let’s Do Business, which takes place this year at Uttoxeter, its usual venue, on 29 June. Among the ‘on tour’ series of events that has

been fixed up so far is the first of the breakfast speakers, who is Laura Shoaf, managing director of Transport for West Midlands. Another new ‘on tour’ event is a networking

idea pioneered by Solihull Chamber, the ‘Curry Club’, where executives meet for networking –

and a curry. The first of these is on 6 February at Pushkar, in Birmingham. On a more formal note, there will also be a

number of Bank of England briefings, featuring Graeme Chaplin, the bank’s agent for the West Midlands and Oxfordshire. Mr Chaplin will be focusing on monetary policy and economic predictions during these events, which are scheduled for 17 March, 21 July and 3 November. As well as the ‘on tour’ events, the Chamber

will once again be holding its flagship events, including the annual dinner and awards (see front page of The Hub for full details), and the popular ‘Expo’ events. Chamber marketing director Katrina Cooke

said: “Our new series of events will be taken to the different regions covered by Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce. This is to encourage members to travel to a different area to meet new people and make new contacts.” A full list of events for the calendar can be found on the Chamber website.

Robert Ball Senior Private Banker Weatherbys Private Bank

As we enter 2017 it is timely to reflect a little on the last twelve months, which have proved to be an extraordinary period for a variety of reasons.

The results of the US election and the UK Brexit referendum were surprising to many people and they will present sizeable challenges on both sides of the Atlantic for some time. Markets have steadied following the initial shocks seen in the summer, but no-one can really predict the way ahead.

As with most situations, there are many reasons to be positive and, at Weatherbys, during these uncertain times we will continue to adopt a calm and prudent approach to Private Banking. For many years we have provided our clients with

cool-headed, long-term advice. This approach will remain a cornerstone of our service in 2017 and beyond, and is reflected in the recent launch of our ‘market tracking’ investment portfolios. These are built around our view that, for many clients, simply tracking the markets – at relatively low cost – can be expected to deliver better outcomes than going to an investment manager. Investing can of course pose challenges but, as trusted advisers, we will continue to focus very firmly on adding value by truly understanding our clients’ needs and giving the best advice that we can.

We look forward to 2017 being an exciting year!
