Paraorchestra makes Birmingham debut
The pioneering British Paraorchestra is to make its Birmingham debut at the Symphony Hall, as part of the THSH Birmingham Classical Season. The Paraorchestra - the world’s
Changsha Cultural Park
first large-scale professional ensemble for disabled musicians - will be joined by members of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), for a programme conducted by the former’s co- founder and artistic director, Charles Hazlewood. The performance will include work by clarinettist-composer Lloyd Coleman.
“There are so many Chinese children playing instruments, and a lot of
kids were taken along by their parents. It made me feel optimistic about the future of classical music in China. “All the concerts were very special because all the venues were so good,
and we were playing to such a young and enthusiastic audience.” Stephen added that the tour had proved very successful in terms of
promoting the CBSO, and also Birmingham. “The visit was incredibly important to our future – in Asia generally, there
is huge growth potential for classical music. “The bigger picture is that in most of the world there is huge growth
potential for classical music and we need to be part of that if we want to be recognised as worldwide ambassadors for Birmingham.”
Brum debut: the British Paraorchestra Richard Hawley, head of artistic
programming for THSH Birmingham, said: “Town Hall Symphony Hall is incredibly proud to be welcoming The British Paraorchestra for their Birmingham debut under the baton of their inspirational founder and conductor Charles Hazlewood.” Charles Hazlewood said: “Including the British Paraorchestra in an internationally-recognised season of classical music at a premium concert hall, sends out a clear message- having a disability in no way precludes you from making world class music.”
