Bands battle it out for charity

Birmingham professional services consultancy WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff is calling on the West Midlands construction industry’s musical talent to go forth into battle, in a bid to raise money for a local charity. The Queen’s Drive based

firm is inviting professionals from the industry to form a company band to battle it out at Construction Rocks, Battle of the Construction Industry Bands – an initiative conceived by Bill Price of WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff and Nigel Fraser of Westone Consulting in 2007. It has raised more than

£110,000 since its inception for various charities. The charity that will benefit

from next year’s ‘battle’ in the Midlands is Network Four. Elaine, who is coordinating

the event for WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff in Birmingham, said: “This competition is a fun way for professionals to let their hair down, while raising money for great causes.” The competition is open

now for entries, and the final takes place in May.

Partnership set to boost regeneration in Walsall

Birmingham real estate company Cushman & Wakefield has been awarded a major contract to help a local authority breathe new life into a number of key development sites in the vicinity of the M6 motorway around Junction 10. The contract is with Walsall Council, which is spearheading the regeneration of sites in the Darlaston element of the Black Country Enterprise Zone (BCEZ). Development of these sites is a key priority for the

council and the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership and it is hoped they will bring 2,000 new jobs to the borough in the coming years. Councillor Lee Jeavons, deputy leader of the council,

said: “Jobs are of the utmost importance in the borough, which has been hit hard over the years by the decline of traditional industries. The council has been playing a vital role in the regeneration of Darlaston and Pleck during the past two decades, and now the results of this are starting to come to the fore.” Cushman & Wakefield’s development consulting team

is to assist the council with the sites, and also play a key role in attracting developers, investors and occupiers. All of the sites are within the Junction 10 cluster,

which forms part of the BCEZ, which includes other sites at i54 and Wolverhampton North. The Darlaston sites occupy some 40 hectares of land,

the largest of which is Phoenix 10, which is situated near both Junction 9 and Junction 10 of the M6. Phoenix 10 extends to 44 acres. The site was

formerly an IMI refinery and has been derelict for years. Once developed, it could accommodate up to

60,000 sq m of floorspace, and its regeneration could help spark the development of other sites in the area. Walsall Council has been investing heavily in

improving the local infrastructure around the various sites to improve regional and local access for Black Country businesses. The council is also working in partnership with

Highways England on the £60 million Junction 10 capacity improvement scheme to reduce congestion.
