Cirencester Scene Magazine - Supporting Local Businesses
AN EAGER young follower of Cirencester’s March Hare Festival was rewarded for his enthusiasm this week when he became the winner of the first mini hare trail in the town.
The event was held over the summer when 26 mini hare sculptures just 10cm tall were individually painted by pupils of Watermoor Primary School and displayed by shops and other businesses in and around Cirencester.
Joshua Woolley, aged 8, from Chesterton, was one of than 250 people to pick up a hare trail passport from the Corini- um Museum during the school holidays.
He and mum Louise spent an entire day searching out all 26 hares and getting the passport stamped by the businesses in- volved.
Joshua, a pupil at Chesterton Primary School, said he loved the giant hare at his school that was decorated by the pupils when the hare festival first took place in 2014 and he was keen to take part in the mini trail this year.
From the 40 completed passports submitted at the end of the summer Joshua’s was drawn at random as
Joshua’s Hare Wins Festival
the winner and festival director Florence Beetlestone this week presented him with the prize of his own hare to decorate.
“It was really fun,” Joshua said of his hare hunt. “Some of the hares were very hard to find and we had to ask in the end but I was really pleased we found them all.”
He added that his favourite was the Incredible Sulk, displayed in the win- dow of estate agents Moore Allen and Innocent in Castle Street.
Florence said she was delighted that somany people had taken part in the trail, which marked the end of the festival this year.
“The Hare Festival has again been taken to heart by people living in and around Cirencester and we are achieving our aim of attracting peo- ple to the town to see the hares here.”
Next year will see the festival extended, with a new design for the scores of giant decorated hares that will be on display in towns and villages throughout the
Cotswolds.
