Bonfire Night Safety for Pets This is a fun time of year for many, but Bonfire Night can be a distressing and frightening time for all our pets; not just dogs. Cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and birds can all be affected, so help your pet by making them as calm and com- fortable as possible.


Apart fromburns fromfireworks and bonfires, some pets panicand run off, maybe resulting in serious injuries or getting lost. Each year we get emergency cases, where pets have been spooked by fireworks and bolted into the road.


In advance:


1. Pheromone diffusers such as the Adaptil diffus- er or collar (dogs) or the Feliway diffuser or spray (cats) can help withmild cases.


2. A ‘safe haven’, such as a quiet enclosed ‘den’, will ensure your pet has a place to go and settle if they become distressed by the noise of fireworks.


3. Get your petmicrochipped and put an ID tag on its collar, then if he runs off he can be traced back to you.


On the night


1. Take your dog for walks in the daytime before the fireworks are set off and keep himon a lead at all times if the noise might make himbolt.


2. Keep a calm routine and attitude and feed pets as normal as this may help to settle themdown for the evening.


3. Keep your pet indoors with windows and doors securely closed and curtains drawn when the
