now be hibernating so be very careful when lighting bonfires that one hasn’t curled up un- der the warm protective layer of grasses, twigs etc. If the pile has been then for any time, please move it carefully to another site before lighting the fire so that any hedgehogs can bemoved to another, safer, winter quarters.
Talking of bonfires, November is, of course, the month for fireworks on the 5th although there seems to be a continuous volley covering around a fortnight every year now. Please do have some consideration for the birds and animals in our lives – pets, farm stock and wild creatures. The night sky being lit up by brightly coloured lights and flashes interspersed by loud bangs and oth- er noises is frightening to very many dogs and other pets let alone the creatures outside that cannot be comforted by theirowners. So instead of letting loose in your back garden, why not go along to one of the many well-organised events around the area where you and your family will enjoy a much better spectacle?
One last tip with winter approaching, this time for a long-forgotten food-stuff. You’ll need to go to a good butcher or farm shop to find mut- ton but the effort will be well worth it. Cheaper and stronger-flavoured than lamb, it is themeat from the adult ewe sheep and was commonly eaten up to the last war. The advent of refriger- ated transport ships meant that fresh lamb from New Zealand and Australia filled the gap when native lamb was no longer available and we got out of the habit of eating mutton which is a shame and I think it’s high time we returned to this delicious, nutritious meat. Try some shoul- der and make a broth or stew and find out what you’ve beenmissing all these years!
