Cirencester Scene Magazine - Establishing Local Connections Corinium Radio Celebrates Culture and Heritage
Volunteers at Corinium Radio are involved in the launch of two new major additions to the station’s programmemenu at the moment.
The local community radio station, based in Cirencester, is making one new show dealing with all things cultural and another based on all that’s happening around Abbey 900, next year’s mam- moth celebration of the founding of Cirencester’s Augustinian Abbey.
“We’re really pleased to be taking both of these projects on board,” said Corini- um spokesman Tony Coleman, “but it will mean a lot of hard work from all those involved.”
The new culture pro- gramme has been named ‘The Cul- ture Hub’ and aims to deal with a wide variety of subjects featuring the lo- cal area, including the arts, music, drama, dance, the spoken word and much more besides.
Local history and heritage will also feature strongly and the hope is that there should be something to enter- tain people across a wide field of in- terests.
The ‘Culture Hub’ is inspired by Cirencester benefactor Daniel Bing- ham and dedicated to him and the continuing work in his name carried out by today’s Bingham Library Trust

Tony went on, “Daniel Bingham was obviously in- terested in art and the furtherance of educational opportunities for the people of Cirencester so it seemed fitting that we should link the programme to him in some way.”
Included in the first programme is a piece about
the ‘Matchstick’ artist Lowry and his connections with the Cotswolds. Also featured is an interview with Glen Moreman, organiser of the Cirencester PhoenixMusic Festival, which has quickly staked its place in the town’s modern cultural scene.
The other programme newly launched at Corinium Radio is ‘Abbey 900’, which aims to keep townsfolk up to date with what’s on the agenda for next year when Cirencester celebrates the 900th anniversary of the founding of its ab- bey.
In reality, there may not be much left to see of this medie- val masterpiece of a building but there will certainly be no shortage of things to get involved with as the anniversary year unfolds.
Corinium Radio hopes this new pro- gramme will play a really useful role in keeping people in touch with everything coming up.
Tony said, “There’s lots in the pipeline to make sure the year is one to be re- membered and here at Corinium Ra- dio we want to help in every way we can.”
The station’s ‘Abbey 900’ programme is planned to go out every month.
Added Tony, “The first one aired on October 30th but it will be repeated and will hopefully be part of our ‘listen
again’ list so you can enjoy it at a time to suit.
If all goes to plan, the first ‘Culture Hub’ show will go out on November 7th, but again it will be re- peated.
After the first show, the aimis to produce the ‘Cul- ture Hub’ on a quarterly basis.
