Cirencester Phil is the Cotswold’s very own orchestra. Although it is still developing, it has sprung into life un- der its talented Director and Conductor, Ian Higginson and its Leader, Emily Thomas.

Its latest concert took place last month at a nearly full St. Peter’s Church Stratton to an audience who truly enjoyed the varied and lively programme and the applause at the end was long and genuine.

The music included well known items, The Over- ture to the Beggar’s Opera by Pepusch, some dances by Beethoven,William Boyce’s Suite. The high- lights, however, were Sharyn Williams playing solo flute for Mozart’s Andante for Orchestra and Flute, Schubert’s March Militaire and Haydn’s Symphony No.1 otherwise known as “The Clock Symphony”. It takes real skill, and hard work to pull off a concert like this. Cirencester and the Cotswolds are fortunate to have volunteer musicians with this level of dedication.

Renaissance Musical Evening

for Chyp Friday 25th November The Waites of Gloucester are modelled on the band of musicians run by the City of Gloucester in the six- teenth and seventeenth centuries. The Waites also perform locally in the Cotswolds under the name “Her Majestie’s Pleasure”.

Enthusiasts for the mu- sic of the renaissance, apart from the pleasure of playing together, they enjoy introducing people to a range of instruments theymay never otherwise have seen, and which sound distinctly different to modern ears. Between them they have have well over 100 instruments of the period.

Come along to the musi- cal evening. at the Corin- ium museum and hear some music from the Tu- dor and Jacobean periods.
