As an authentic member of the 'noir' genre, this is not a read for the easily distressed but the compelling plot and vile characters make this a wonderful excursion into a criminal world that might just exist round the corner or along the leafy lane near you. Then there is the humour and I admit I laughed out loud, rather a lot; as well as shaking with rage and shuddering with revulsion at some of the worst excesses of the all too believable lives I felt I had been alongside during the course of the page-turned thrill.
