Forthcoming Events
By Keith Nicol
Summer has just about come to an end: Autumn is just around the corner: Kids are back at school: and you can find parking once again. Yes; September is here and with it a slew of Moors and Christians Fesivals plus a few other events of interest. Formentera del Segura will be enjoying their annual fiesta in honour of San Roque and San Miguel until the 4th September 2016. There are many traditional activities such as the ribbon races, paella competition, release of the heifers, ringing of the bells, concerts and the solemn procession. On Saturday 3rd at 6pm there's a Foam and Fancy Dress Party at the Sports Centre finishing at midnight with Fireworks at the Sports Centre. Sunday 4th September is the last day starting at 12:30pm: Solemn Mass in honour of Patron Saints San Roque and San Miguel: 2pm, fireworks and finishing at 7pm with a Grand Family Show at the Sports Centre. The Moors and Christians seem to be everywhere during the summer (with the possible exception of Torrevieja!) and will be marching in Castalla until the 4th September. This year commemorates the 700 years of Moorish occupation of the area which took place between the 7th and 14th century. During the Moorish rule there were many battles with the Christians, and so the fiesta focuses on these. Thursday 1st September ‘The Entrance’ at 12 noon with the Opening Ceremony from the town hall balcony, followed by the Mascletas and the L’Arranc (fiesta hymn) performed by the music bands. 5pm Grand Entrance Parade of the Moors and Christians: 10pm Procession with the statue of the Santísima Virgen de la Soledad from the Ermita de la Sang to the Parish Church accompanied by the Moors and Christians. Friday 2nd September ‘First day of Thunder’: 8am Diana, early morning parade of the music bands and ringing of the church bells: 12 noon, Parade with Gunfire, from their point of gathering to the Plaza Mayor: 5pm War between the Moors and Christians in the Plaza Major, finishing with the Christian surrender: 9pm Procession of the patron saint la Santísima Virgen de la Soledad accompanied by all the troops and their musical bands. Saturday 3rd September ‘Day of the Offering’. 8am Diana, early morning parade of the music bands and ringing of the bells. 12:30 Children’s Parade from Avda. Republica Argentina to la Plaza Mayor. 7pm Flower Offering Procession in honour of the Santísima Virgen de la Soledad. Sunday 4th September

‘Second day of Thunder’: 8am Diana, early morning parade of the music bands and ringing of the church bells: 12 noon Parade with Gunfire, from their point of gathering to the Plaza Mayor. 5pm War between the Moors and Christians in the Plaza Major, finishing with the Moorish surrender. 9pm Parade of the Pujada with all the Moors and Christians troops and their music bands from the Parish church via the Placeta de Carreter where the closing song will be preformed, then onto the finish at the Ermita de la Preciosísima Sangre. Monday 5th September. 9.30pm Spectacular firework display to end the fiesta. La Vuelta returns to the Costa Blanca after its success last year. The La Vuelta is the Spanish equivalent of the Tour de France and hopes are high that Tour de France winner and Bronze Olympic Medalist Chris Froome will be competing for the SKY Team. On Friday 9th September the 19th stage of the 81st edition will start in Javea and finish in Calpe. The following day the 20th stage will start in Benidorm and finish in Aitana. The Rojales Craft Market returns to mornings for the Autumn so if you are looking to while away an hour or so, looking for a small gift, piece of art or decoration, don’t miss the monthly Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales. Local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. It takes place on the first Sunday of the month from 11am to 2pm.
Another fun and unusual event for kids of all ages is the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the friends of the railways association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm with Miniature Train Rides during February and March on the 2nd Sunday from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Every month the Friends of the Railways Association host a miniature train event at the railway museum in Torrellano. Donations of 1.50€ per visit are requested. If you fancy a night tapping your toes and reliving your youth at a music concert, there are a couple you might be interested in. On the 27th and 28th September at the Barclaycard Centre in Madrid, the Red Hot Chili Peppers will perform, followed by two nights at the Palau Sant Jordi, Barcelona, on 1st and 2nd October. Mr, Hipshake himself, the one and only Ricky Martin will be in Madrid on 16th September at the Palacio Vistalegre and on 18th September at the Albergue Juvenil El Prado, in Merida.
After an excellent concert last summer, Jackson Browne returns to Spain and performs at the Teatro Nuevo Apolo, Madrid on Wednesday 14th September. For the younger ones, Tinie Tempah - Disturbing Ibiza 2016, at the Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel, on Friday 16th September. And a date for your diary in October will be the First Clubs, Associations and Lifestyle show at the TCF, Torrevieja Christian Fellowship on Thursday 13th October. Entry is free with doors opening at 10am and closing around 3pm. It's a chance to find a new hobby, sports or social club as more than 40 clubs are expected under the one roof, giving out information about what they do, where they meet, costs, plus a chance to ask any questions you may have. The tea and coffee bar will be open and a dozen or so lifestyle partners will be there, plus a team from QuironSalud answering your health questions. A fun day not to be missed.
We try to ensure that all information on forthcoming events is correct. All information is sent directly to Keith from the organisers or local town halls and not just taken from other sources. We still advise you to check any information as there are sometimes last minute changes or cancellations which are out of our control.
