for advice on 634 349 240 or by email at diabetes.helpofdenia@gmail.com. The health benefits of weight loss for people with diabetes, and for a healthy diet for the rest of us are well established, and this was expertly explained to all those at the June meeting. In September we have another Dietitian / Nutritionist but this time from Cambridge 800 who may be sharing how a low calorie diet can help those with diabetes wanting to lose and maintain weight loss, and also eat healthily. Voltaire is reported to have famously said, “Common sense is not so common”. The only food group which raises blood glucose is carbohydrate so in T2 Diabetes it makes sense to lower the input of refined carbohydrates, flour, bread, cereal, pasta and even potato. Again common sense is not so common when many with diabetes want to lose weight but are still on SUs ie Sulphonylureas (Gliclazide, Glimperimide), which prevent weight loss. So if you are on an SU and trying unsuccessfully to lose weight you could go and talk to your doctor as there are now alternative effective glucose lowering medications which are weight neutral, or others which help with weight loss. Come and learn more, become informed so you can engage with your Health Care Provider. In June we also heard about the relevance of the HbA1c, eGFR and ACR. These routine lab tests are some of the basic building blocks the person with diabetes needs to know about in order to manage their diabetes. If these terms sound like a foreign language, then you need to come to one of the meetings or contact me, Dorothy. See you soon Dorothy.
