Three-year business plan to drive Chamber forward
G Shieldhall water project
Nothing boring about tunnel trip
Members of Glasgow Chamber were given a special ‘Behind the Scenes’ visit to Glasgow’s largest infrastructure project, part of Scottish Water’s £250 million project to improve river water quality and the natural environment.
“The scale is amazing and will bring massive benefits to Glasgow’s citizens and businesses,” said Richard Muir, Deputy Chief Executive, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, who led the Chamber’s visitors. “This programme is the biggest investment in the Greater Glasgow area’s waste water infrastructure in more than a century.” The visitors were kitted out in health and safety gear and given a full briefing at Shieldhall, before being shown a massive piece of kit, named Daisy the Driller, the 1,000 tonne, 180 metre-long tunnel boring machine (TBM), effectively an underground factory on rails. The machine is now gouging out the massive tunnel between Craigton and Queen’s Park. Earlier, Roseanna Cunningham,
the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform, launched Daisy in a ceremony at Craigton industrial estate with Glasgow schoolboy, Lewis Bennett, who named the machine. In
ship-launch style, she cracked a bottle on the side of the TBM containing a litre of finest Scottish water rather than the customary champagne. The £100 million tunnel, at 3.1 miles long, will be five times longer than the Clyde Tunnel and, at 4.7m in diameter, big enough to fit a double-decker bus inside. The Shieldhall Tunnel will
enable Scottish Water to improve water quality in the River Clyde and its tributaries and tackle flooding. When completed, it will provide 90,000 cubic metres of extra storm water storage, the equivalent of 36 Olympic- sized swimming pools, and the increased capacity of the waste water network will provide better screening of overflows into rivers and reduce the risk of flooding in parts of the Mount Florida/Toryglen and Giffnock areas. “The Chamber tour was an
insight into the level of precision engineering required to deliver projects of this scale. What is also impressive has been the attention to keeping the community on board about this major investment. “I think Scottish Water is to be commended for its corporate social responsibility. This is a significant Zero Waste Scotland project with a commitment to best practice and recycling,” said Richard Muir.

President remembers Chamber Somme hero
