Restored clock tower at GoMA unveiled

Work to restore the clock tower at one of Glasgow’s most famous buildings has been completed. Restoration work at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) focused on the clock tower and weather vane, which were repaired and reinstated. Previously coated in stained

cream masonry paint and cement repairs, together with vegetation growing out of the Corinthian column bases, the clock tower has undergone an extensive series of conservation repairs. Glasgow Life, which manages GoMA, instructed conservation-accredited architects at the Glasgow studio of Austin- Smith:Lord to assess the condition of the tower. The work was undertaken by City Building Group

LLP and CBC Stone and the project received financial grant support from Historic Environment Scotland. Initially the team began

repairing the tower by cleaning off old paint, which was causing damage to the stonework, redecorating the clock face and removing vegetation. However, during the examination of the sandstone masonry, the restorers discovered some serious errors in the way in which the original tower had been constructed, between 1827 and 1829. This necessitated more extensive restorations, including replacing stones that were incorrectly bedded in the past.

Brick by Brick Appeal

City Legacy reaches target of £90,000 donation

City Legacy, the developers of the Athletes’ Village, have presented a cheque for £30,000 to the Brick by Brick Appeal. The appeal is raising funds to build a new home for Glasgow’s Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice. In 2015, City Legacy – a

consortium of four Glasgow-based companies CCG, Cruden, WH Malcolm and Mactaggart & Mickel – pledged to donate £300 to the appeal for each of the 300 homes sold at The Village. Two donations of £30,000 have already been made to the hospice as the homes were quickly snapped up, and with The Village now completely

sold out, this third £30,000 donation takes the grand total to a fantastic £90,000. The hospice’s Brick by Brick

Appeal is raising the £21m needed to build a new, purpose-built facility in the city’s Bellahouston Park. The foundations go down this summer and patients are expected to move in 2018. The aim is to bring 21st century hospice care to the people of Glasgow, a major step forward in the provision of palliative care services, providing the flexibility to develop and improve services and lower the age limit of patients to 15 years and over.
