lasgow is home to many successful businesses, from entrepreneurial


start-ups to international household names, which choose to base themselves here over other cities in the UK and around the world. Yet it is also increasingly popular as a destination for visiting businesses; a centre of gravity for conferences, meetings and collaboration. Tis is borne out by figures


released recently by the Glasgow City Marketing Board’s (GCMB) Convention Bureau, which reveal the city won a record amount of future conference business in the year to March 2016, worth an estimated £141 million. Up from £139 million in the 2014/15 financial year, this was the highest revenue for a single year on record. Te 513 new meetings secured during the preceding 12 months equate to around 420,000 delegate days. So, why are so many national


and international businesses choosing to come together in Glasgow? Te city has a great deal to offer, from its world-class conference centres, hotels and flexible business venues, to its rich cultural life and excellent restaurants. One of the main draws, however, is its accessibility. Served by a major international airport, comprehensive public transport and a full range of private transport options, Glasgow is an exceptionally easy city to get to, and to travel around once you are here.

As Scotland’s principal long-haul airport, Glasgow Airport is a hugely important transport hub for the city and for Scotland, connecting the central belt with business travellers from across the world. Last year, the airport enjoyed its largest ever annual increase in passenger numbers, aſter more than 8.7 million passed through its doors. Tis represents an annual increase of 13 per cent, or more than one million additional passengers, marking its fiſth consecutive year of growth and its return to pre-recession passenger levels. Over the past 12 months, the


airport has announced 30 new routes and services, significantly strengthening its connections to major European cities. Te new services led to upliſts in both international and domestic traffic over the year – up by 16.8 per cent and 9 per cent respectively – making it one of the fastest growing airports in Europe.
