The 2014 Employment and Skills Summit, held at Rolls-Royce
The summit of the skills crisis
The majority of businesses are still struggling to find suitably skilled people, according to Chamber research. The results of the Quarterly Economic Survey for the first three months
of 2015 revealed that 63% of recruiting firms had problems finding people with the skills they needed. The survey showed that skilled recruitment remained the prime concern
for East Midlands firms. Building on the success of a similar event last year and continuing its drive
to strengthen the link between education and the world of work, the Chamber will be hosting an Employment and Skills Summit, in Nottingham, on 28 June. The summit will bring together education providers, businesses and
policymakers to discuss practical ways in which businesses and the education sector can work together to deliver the skills required to drive the East Midlands’ economy. It will include a series of workshops, panel discussions and guest speakers. The opening address will be given by Scott Knowles, the Chamber’s
Chief Executive. He said: “Our Quarterly Economic Survey has, for some time, served as a
stark reminder that there is still a lot of work to be done to address this fundamental problem.” Key speakers at the summit will include Dr Deirdre Hughes, Chair of the
National Council for Careers and Principal Research Fellow at the University of Warwick Institute for Employment Research, who will talk about careers provision and how to mend a fragmented system, and Julie Ashton, Senior Inspector for Her Majesty’s Inspectors, Ofsted, who will talk about the changes Ofsted continues to make towards measuring employability activity in schools. Panel discussions and workshops focusing on understanding the
productivity puzzle, apprenticeship reform, improving the attainment of STEM skills, enhancing employability and linking education delivery to the local economy will round off the summit, followed by lunch and networking opportunities among a raft of exhibitions.
