CHAMBER NEWS Wellbeing starts at work

The importance of mental health and wellbeing in the workplace was the focus of an event in Derby last month. The Health and Safety Executive estimates that

around two million people a year experience mental health problems related to their current or past employment. And conciliation service Acas estimates that

mental health problems cost UK employers around £30bn a year – around £1.7bn in the East Midlands.

‘Mental health and wellbeing has clearly moved up the agenda for employers’

Poor mental health is associated with increased

risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes, while good mental health is a known protective factor. To help businesses understand the issues and their

obligations, the Chamber, in partnership with law firm Geldards and insurer Westfield Health, hosted a workshop looking at mental health and wellbeing at work.

It featured presentations from Geldards’

employment team, Westfield Health’s HR team and NHS Derbyshire, along with discussions led by Derby North MP Amanda Solloway and James Morris MP, who is Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Mental Health. It took place at Geldards’ offices on Pride Park, Derby. Ian Bates, the Chamber’s Forums Manager, said:

“Mental health and wellbeing has clearly moved up the agenda for employers, which has been borne out by the feedback the Chamber received from many of its members. Growing research demonstrates the importance of good mental health and wellbeing in relation to performance and effectiveness at work and this event was all about raising awareness of the issues, sharing best practice and helping employers to promote positive mental health among their staff.”

Kam is April’s Our Star winner

Kam Atker, the Chamber’s eBusiness Club Adviser Team Leader, was the winner of the Our Stars award for April. A significant number of

nominations were received in April from many departments and office locations, but Kam received several nominations from various departments. “Well done Kam. She was

nominated by several staff for taking a holistic view of Chamber business, constantly seeking new membership opportunities through her work in the eBusiness Club team and demonstrating living by the Chamber values," said Chamber Chief Executive Scott Knowles.
