CHAMBER NEWS The fight against domestic abuse

The Chamber is partnering with Nottinghamshire Police to help promote the force's new campaign to combat domestic violence. The latest available figures show

that more than a fifth of women in the UK take time off work because of domestic violence. And two per cent lose their jobs

each year as a direct result. The lost productivity is costing

businesses almost £2bn a year, which equates to around £21.5m in Nottinghamshire and £95.2m across the East Midlands. Currently, there are 125 domestic

violence incidents recorded every week in Nottinghamshire, the majority of which are committed by men against women. It has been estimated that three

quarters of victims of domestic abuse can’t escape when at work, the abuse continuing through, for example, phone calls and emails. The Police and the Chamber

hope to reduce incidents of domestic abuse by raising awareness among local businesses. In January 2016, the force

became a White Ribbon accredited organisation, meaning it is recognised for effectively carrying out its policing duties in domestic

abuse cases and also has the correct workplace policies ready to recognise domestic abuse and support any staff that may be affected. By inviting other businesses to

review their own situation, it is hoped that the effects of domestic abuse on employees will be reduced and that staff will be more confident and better supported at a difficult time in their lives. The campaign invites companies

and clubs to adopt the White Ribbon pledge. The force's Head of Public

Protection, Superintendent Helen Chamberlain, said: "We hope businesses and clubs will adopt the pledge and benefit by knowing how
