seven of our ships are giving lectures on nature and culture, and will take you out on excursions on their own home turf.
We are also refurbishing four of our ships and introducing a brand new one, which will make it even nicer to sail with us.
Dear explorers, One autumn evening, as Hurtigruten sailed past Skjervøy, I saw it for the very first time. We were heading south when a series of lights flashed from the windows ashore, almost in rhythm. Un- til now, this was something I had only heard of. How mothers, husbands, daughters and friends in houses and cottages salute a member of the crew on board Hurtigruten as it sails by; an engineer, a waiter, a steward or officer. Sometimes it is also just a friendly nod to the ship itself.
Now I was standing on deck, seeing it with my own eyes.
These little flashes of light make me feel grateful and proud. To me they are more important than the midnight sun and the Northern Lights. I see them as everyday real affirmations that Hurtig- ruten truly is a part of the Norwegian coast – just as the coast has been a part of Hurtigruten for over 120 years.
This is where we come from. For generations, Hurtigruten has been the lifeblood of the coast by carrying local passengers, cargo, post, medicines and other essential commodities, and this is as natural and important to us today as it ever was. When the northbound and southbound ships meet and whistle to each other, it signifies more than just two ships crossing paths. It is a meeting of the coast’s very own history.
This might also be why so many guests from home and abroad choose Hurtigruten. They want the original. They want to go where no one else goes, with a crew and a ship that belongs there. They want to experience and learn from someone who is at home.
The knowledge of the coast and the sea is part of Hurtigruten’s DNA. The new expedition teams on
Furthermore, we have upgraded our “Norway's Coastal Kitchen”, to now include breakfast and lunch. The food we serve is caught or harvested nearby, and prepared in accordance with hundred- year-old local traditions. In some places, the fish is actually so fresh that we can point out the boat that caught it for you. Needless to say, we operate in a gentle and sustainable manner.
We now also offer even more active and education- al experiences off our ships along the coast. You will understand coast; be it paddling in a kayak outside Tromsø, or speeding along in a rubber boat in Saltstraumen while you watch an eagle dive towards the sea for fish. We will show you the wild and the beautiful up close. No one else can bring you closer to nature, the locals and the daily life along the coast.
Finally, I am going to share a secret with you: April. No other time of the year has as much raw nature. The light is never as clear and bright. The white mountains against the deep blue fords. The days are long, but you still have the red sunsets. It may be summer in Bergen and winter in the north. The contrasts in the areas we sail across are huge. The weather, the light and the landscape changes constantly throughout the journey.
Welcome aboard! I would encourage you to spend an evening on deck and see if you get to experience a house that flashes to you.
