Our ships have provided a vital link between cities, towns and hamlets, carrying local passengers, freight and guests since 1893.

1952-82 1952
Since 1949, seven new ships have been added to the fleet. The entire fleet is fully equipped with diesel engines and transports 500,000 passengers a year. The separation into different classes is gone.
1993-07 1993
Hurtigruten celebrates its 100th birth- day. The construction of the MS Kong Harald marks the dawn of the modern era for Hurtigruten. 11 of the 14 ships are in permanent regular service.
2001
On 30 May, the MS Lofoten (built in 1964) is declared a national monument by the Norwegian government.
2002 1968
Hurtigruten launches an express route to Spitsbergen in the summer months.
1982 The new vessels MS Vesterålen, MS Midnatsol and MS Narvik replace older ships. The Midnatsol is the first ship with a side hatch for easier loading and unloading.
A new generation ship is in use in Chile and travels from Cape Horn to the Antarctic Peninsula. Two new ships, MS Trollfjord and MS Finnmarken, commence their maiden voyages along the Norwegian coast.
2003
The new MS Midnatsol is christened in Hamburg.
2007 The new Hurtigruten expedition ship MS Fram is added to the fleet. MS Fram is the most modern ship of its kind at the time and the maiden voyage goes to Greenland.
2010
In addition to Greenland and the waters of the Antarctic, MS Fram now also operates along the coast of Spitsbergen and Europe.
2011
The northbound journey with MS Nord- norge from Bergen to Kirkenes from 15 to 22 June is broadcast live on Norwe- gian television. At 134 hours, 42 minutes and 45 seconds in length, it made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s longest live broadcast.
2013
Hurtigruten celebrates its 120th anniversary.
2015 Hurtigruten Foundation was established.
2010-17 2016
MS Fram is accompanied by MS Midnatsol in Antarctica, more than doubling the capacity for bringing explorers and adventures to the South Pole. MS Midnatsol also explores the Chilean fjords and the highlights of Antarctica on these voyages.
The new Hurtigruten expedition ship MS Spitsbergen is added to the fleet. Expedition Teams are introduced on the Norwegian Coast.
2017
With the new expedition ship MS Spitsbergen, Canada joins the list of destinations to strengthen Hurtigruten’s position as a world leader in exploration travel. New expeditions along the South American coastline are also launched.
