L
ocated in an idyllic riverside setting just two miles from Dartmouth and a half mile from Blackpool Sands is Michael Sutton’s Wine Cellar, a family run independent wine merchant offering customers a selection of competitively priced wines from all over the world.
Operating from a 300 year-old barn, they aim to provide their customers with a relaxed, informative and fun wine-buying experience. You can also select wines directly from their website which are delivered free in the South Hams area.
Their story: Michael Sutton, having been a wine lover for some considerable time, decided that when he retired from farming he would pursue his interest in wine more seriously. So with the help and encouragement of his great friend Ronnie Hicks, a qualified Master of Wine, he set up Michael Sutton’s Cellar in 1985. Michael’s ethos was to only sell wines that he and his wife Juliet liked to drink themselves and which represented good value for money. He had a wide network of family and friends who became regular buyers of his wines. Michael was a friendly, hospitable wine merchant who was always willing to share his knowledge of wine. Over the years Michael and Juliet often travelled through Europe and to Australia to meet the wine producers and build up lifelong relationships with them and their wines. Michael was always concerned that the customer could totally trust the quality and provenance of the wines on offer. Since Michael’s death in 2011, Juliet and the family have continued to run the business with the same ethos and values that Michael held so proudly.
Knowledge, advice and value for money At Michael Sutton’s Cellar, they pride themselves on their friendly and expert advice. Guided by a Master of Wine, their painstaking selection process has enabled them to produce a wine list that is unique, gratifying and of a consistently high standard. Customers can choose wines that they can be confident will be enjoyable to drink and can rely upon when entertaining friends. As an independent wine merchant, they import the majority of their wine direct from small European producers from whom they have bought for many years. Steeped in decades of traditional wine making, the families who run these estates are passionate about producing great wines. By not having to spend money
