Cruising into Dartmouth in 2016 2016
by Tricia Daniels, Advisor Dart Harbour
will see the arrival of 8 cruise ships over a five month period, which starts
quite early in mid April, with the return of National Geographic Explorer – a regular visitor to Dartmouth between 2009 and 2012. When a ship sails up the river or settles
out by the castle, it is the final part of an 18 month collaboration which starts when the Harbour office is contacted about its availability to handle a vessel on a particular date. once details have been exchanged regarding the technicalities of the ship, a reservation will be made and planning begins for that cruise company. Dart Harbour Authority, as the contracted
port, becomes part of a team that includes the cruise company’s chosen shipping agency who takes care of regular routine tasks for that ship in each port on behalf of its owners. they are the main information conduit before any arrival and there will be a representative on hand in Dartmouth whilst the ship is here. A ground handling agency will also be contracted by the cruise company to arrange and timetable shore excursions in the Dartmouth area and beyond. they will be tasked with moving guests around the chosen programme with professional guides. ships work to a strict timetable and as a result, in the
weeks prior to arrival, much information is exchanged between the port and the shipping and ground
handling agencies to ensure that everything is in place, everyone is working to the same schedule and that guests have a seamless transit and the best possible time in our area. At the end of a visit, I try to ensure that I am on town Jetty with the guests as they tender back to their vessel. I want to see smiling faces, happy people and to hear their feedback. that’s when we’ll know that working in partnership has paid off for us all and that at some point in the future we may see that company back in our town again. this year, we have a mix of ships arriving:
three arrivals from the national Geographic team, as well as old friends serenissima, sea Cloud ll and the exclusive europa – who will be here during the Dart Music Festival (13 – 15 May). ocean nova will be arriving in May after a 4 year absence, whilst Aegean odyssey will making her maiden visit. We’ll arrange information, occasional music and a personal welcome by the town Crier or the Mayor and Mayoress as ever. We
can only hope that by the time of the first arrival, we will still have access to the invaluable assistance of the staff and volunteers of the tourist Information Board, who have played a key role in putting us on the cruise destination map.
