NEWS FROM THE DART LIFEBOAT T

www.dartlifeboat.org.uk

he RnLI Dart educational team - made up of myself, educational

volunteer, Bob Thomas, station Manager and various lifeboat crew members - recently went into the local primary schools to talk about the local RnLI activities over the last year. It has been a quieter year for call outs locally. no one is sure why. the weather certainly played a part. Bad weather increases the likelihood of people getting into difficulty; really bad weather, such as we often suffered last year, results in people staying at home. the HMCG system was bedding down with many changes to their operating systems and personnel. since Brixham CG Control Centre closed we were initially under the control of Falmouth but have now been attached to the CG Centre at solent. the RnLI’s campaign encouraging people to “Respect the Water” is becoming established and Local Community Lifesaving Plans are being formulated at every RnLI lifeboat station. As the education and guidance contained in these locally directed plans begin to take effect, hopefully the number of emergency call outs will decrease. they are not only aimed at those on the water but also at those who never expected to enter the water when they left home, such as walkers, anglers and commercial fishermen. “Respect the Water” is a difficult concept to explain to children and they were shown a photo of three paddleboards belonging to visitors to the area. they had expected to be able to make their way upstream against a strong ebb tide, wearing only shirts and shorts. they had no lifejackets, lighting or means of communication and and attempted the excursion in total darkness. the lifeboat crew stored their craft for the night and supplied them with

lifejackets before returning them home in the lifeboat. the children gave them “nil Points” for Respect the Water. two of our crew are on the RnLI

english Channel Division Flood Relief team and were sent to Cockermouth and Carlisle to take part in the flood relief effort. the six RnLI lifeboat teams rescued over 300 from their homes over

three days. the children were also shown

photos of the inside of the recently fully opened RnLI Visitor Centre on the south embankment. Meetings are currently being arranged with the local teachers to visit and to share their ideas as to how best to use this excellent new educational facility. Finally the children were told about

storm Force, the junior membership of the RnLI for 7 to 11 year olds. one of the major advantages of joining this year is that there will be a storm Force Day on July 16 at Dart lifeboat station with input and demonstrations from the lifeboat crew, the RnLI lifeguards, the Flood Relief team and the local coastguards. entry is only open to storm Force members and joining packs are available in the Visitor Centre.
