Things are literally springing into life right now across South Devon. Here are a few of our favourite things to do this time of year.

1 Laugh your way through

your way through Dartmouth’s Comedy Week, which takes place every March. this year’s week of merriment begins on March 8. organised by the Flavel Arts Centre, this year’s delights include Gary Delaney from the BBC’s Mock the Week; a film tribute to the late comedy legend Rik Mayall; and shazia Mirza, among many others. tickets sell out fast so move quickly on this one. For the full line up and tickets see www.theflavel.org.uk

Try a spot of Wormcharming this year’s famous Blackawton International Wormcharming Festival

is on sunday May 1. Witness this wacky spectacle or get stuck in trying to coax worms to the surface. since the festival began in 1984, hundreds of zany methods have been employed to win, including flute playing and secret potions. now an established annual fixture, the event attracts hundreds of teams and spectators to the village and raises vital funds for charity. this year’s fancy dress theme is the emergency services. organisers have suggested this can extend from fire, police and ambulance and beyond, to include comic book super heroes too. so look out for lots of competitors with their underpants on top of their trousers! After the Wormcharming competition there’s a fun dog show, including best fancy dress dog and most handsome dog. see www.wormcharming.co.uk for more details.

the racecourse stages 18 fixtures throughout the season up to october, including a ladies day in June. on each weekend and school holiday fixture there’s a family enclosure with inflatables and garden games to entertain the children. Children’s admission to the races is free with a paying adult. there’s plenty of food and drink available during and after the races at the Winning Post and Paddock restaurants. For information and racing dates visit www.newtonabbotracing.com or phone 01626 353235.
